Been lurking here, finally have a question.

Do you charge for phone consults? I have been getting more and more "I just have a quick question for you" calls.

I have it posted on my site that I charge $15 for phone consultations but I rarely get paid for them because most are referred by doctors/midwifes and never see my website.

I find it so odd to ask for payment. HOWEVER, I am finding myself more and more bothered by NOT being paid for them. As you know these can be very time consuming.

The client is not just calling a friend, they are calling an expert.

How do you handle phone consultations?

I don't charge for phone consults but 95% turn into a paid consult. I charge per consult not by the hour either. I honestly cut right to the chase: Are you interested in setting up an appointment? If she says she has some questions, usually you can point her to a LLL group or other support group in the area.

I am the only PP IBCLC in the area and the only LLLL, so I do phone/email help

for free. I do make it very clear, though, when they've gone past needing

information to actually needing to be seen.

I offer a free 15 minute phone call " to determine if you need a consultation. " However. coming from a MTM volunteer background, I find it really hard to limit the call to 15 mins, especially if the mother is distressed. The other thing I find hard is when mothers have a lot of general questions, something I am trying to work on. What really gets me, though, is when after I have answered all the general questions, the mother cuts to the REAL problem but is not willing to pay for a consultation.

, I looked at your page about phone consults. Does the mom call you, then she decides about a phone consult and you hang up, she pays and then calls you back at a set up time or is it fairly immediate? Do you have a separate form for phone consults? I'm just curious about the flow. Also, Liz, I learned the line from a wise LC here, if the phone call goes longer than 10 minutes, I say…"it sounds like you could really benefit from a consultation. Would you like to set one up?"
