Thank you for saying this. We all come different backgrounds. I only recently learned the virtues of organic foods when I became a lactation consultant. Before that, I was the one rolling my eyes at other mothers who I interpreted as "crunchy" or "rich" when they bought only organic apples. I am neither crunchy or rich, organic or non-organic, store bought or fresh. I'm not sure that I will ever be one way or another. Very few of my clientele is as committed to buying organic foods and Whole Foods is a novelty in our area. Stop & Shop, Big Y and Walmart are the top grocers in our area. I shop there too. I've learned from you all and what I learn I try to pass on to my "mothers". Some listen and some say, "I can't afford that" or "my doctor says there is no difference

between organic/non-organic or formula/breastmilk". Many are told "not to stress themselves out". We may all do things a little differently but all with the same intent - to help mothers and babies. Subject: Re: dietary recommendations for thrush

Thank you all for such a wealth of information! The education here is wonderful! And it is proving helpful for my client as I am sure it is proving helpful for us all. I’d like to say though that some have taken as attacks comments and questions that were NOT meant that way at all! I know these women and to ask if one really would refer out for certain reasons is an honest question, as is asking if one truly knows people who don’t cook. Asking where one practices is another question that is of honest intent as here in the USA there are MANY different cultures, sub-cultures and areas where life is dramatically different from one locale to the next. Life in New York City proper is certainly dramatically different than life in Sacramento

CA. For example: Some of us take the train/subway to our consults – I wouldn’t step foot on our public transit. I drive. Others only do office visits while other only home visits. Some of us cook – some of us don’t know how! I cook nearly 100% from scratch now, buying nearly all organic foods whenever possible and irritating the hell out of my family in the process. J Many of my clients wouldn’t know how to prepare a home-cooked meal if their lives depended on it while others have their own fruit and veggie gardens in their back yards. (we have a new garden this year!) And I have been asked on more than one occasion to teach a new mom how to simply make oatmeal…seriously! Other examples: I am NOT vehemently against formula – it was the only thing I had available to feed my son for 2 weeks when my supply crashed and burned 17 yrs ago. Others can’t stand the stuff and will make their own rather than use store bought (had I known of that option and had an education about formula at the time I might have considered it myself!). Many, like myself, will happily work with mothers who exclusively pump because in our society (or area) it’s going to be better to work with them than not…they still need support. And the same with exclusively formula feeding moms – I welcome them at my parent group. Some choose to NOT work with that population for their own reasons – and that is totally fine. Especially if there are others to refer them to. We have to do what feels best for us – and feel free to share that in order to educate others that life

is different around our world and some of us just don’t feel comfortable working with certain populations. I think it is wonderful that those who don’t feel comfortable working with a particular population are honest about it and refer out. J None of this is to say that any one’s practice is better than the others… This is just to say that there are about a million different ways to practice, places to live, cultures to live in, opinions, etc…NO ONE was ever being attacked by the questions asked. The questions are for education for us all so that we can see how each other lives, where we live and to remember just how different life can be in the USA…because I guarantee my life and experiences here in Sacramento CA are dramatically different that say, Becky ’s, Burger’s,

and many others… ;) I for one find it fascinating! Warmly,Jaye Jaye Simpson, CLC, IBCLC, CIIM, MoMBreastfeeding Networkwww.breastfeedingnetwork.net
