Hi everyone,

Have any of you on Methotrexate experienced blurred vision? I am at

work and all of a sudden I started to see a blurry circle with a

black outline start moving from center to bottom left. After a while

it increased in size and everything got blurry peripherally. This

morning my eyes seemed a bit sore. It's subsided a bit now. I put a

call in to my Rheumy and am waiting for her to call back.

Any information would be most appreciated. It's kinda scary because I

have never experienced this before.

Thanks!

Love,

Alan

Alan,

It is listed as a rare side effect of MTX

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/uspdi/202356.html#SXX18

Please let us know what your doctor says. I never had any vision problems

while on it. I can imagine it is pretty scary.

Thanks a,

It's basically subsided but came on with no warning at all. It is

almost like a migraine aura but hopefully without the accompanying

headache. Yes, it was pretty scary.

Thanks Again!!!

You're welcome Alan. Did you get a hold of your doctor?

I hope whatever it is has passed. Please be careful if you have to drive.

i am so upset by this. i told them i thought mtx or avandia were the culprit.

they put me through all the allergy tests $400 worth that i now have to pay

out of my pocket/ i had my other dr tell me it was " old skin " then when it

came up that i was allergic to metal he asked what i had used. (like i was

doing something kinky!!) it took me almost a month to sit down after they

took the cultures of skin. ( that was another $300) and the answer was in

black and white, right in front of me. my side effects have changed so

dramatcally on this drug. makes me wonder what is next. but on the same note.

it does do something. i am back at work for the first time in 2 years (even

if only part-time) it is still a great improvement. kathy in il (not

feeling like a dog scootin across the carpet tonight thank you!!)

I agree Kathy. The nurses basically said I was crazy and should see

my eye doctor.

I did and the nurses told me it had nothing to do with the MTX. I am

convinced it did because it never happened before. Luckily it

subsided.

Thanks again for the information a.

Alan, the Cracker Jax doctor I USE to have also told me that my BLEEDING

GUMS were NOT...I repeat...NOT a side effect of MTX, and to GO SEE A

DENTIST!

Then when I called back about vaginal bleeding, and TOLD THEM I had gone

through menopause 10 years... they said, NOT a side effect of MTX! Then

said, GO TO YOUR OBGYN! She laughed after all the sonograms, and

biopsiey and said... IT IS A SIDE EFFECT OF MTX! Why does he think they

use it for an " abortion drug " >???!!!

Anyway, she called him.

He STILL claimed (at my next visit) that none (of the above) was a side

effect of MTX!

I could tell more about this episode of MTX and the Cracker Jax

doctor.... but I don't think you have a YEAR to read it!

I guess each time we all go on a new med, we need to go home and print

out ALL SIDE EFFECTS of the drug, and bring it to the next office visit.

Tell them its just so they will KNOW in case you get any of the side

effects listed!

Hi Elf,

I know. Isn't it crazy that there is a reluctance to just admit it's

a side effect? I have never understood that. For me, it didn't mean I

necessarily wanted to go off MTX, I just wanted some confimation.

Plus, how are others down the road going to know anything about side

effects if those that precede them, like ourselves, don't say

anything? Okay, I am getting pretty rhetorical here...;)

I am definitely going to bring the side effect information I have

which clearly states " blurred vision " .

I'm just fortunate that there has been no recurrance.

Thanks Elf. Have a great Monday.

I agree wholeheartedly, Susie and Al. It's crazy. We don't have a good

way to report side-effects and, when we do tell our physicians, they act

as if we are imagining things. If they think that the studies accurately

and completely predict what will happen in the post-marketing period,

they better think again. There has to be a better way.
