I will have to type it out...so have an inner experience with it...like i did<g>! This one's for you, Anand...hope it helps to get you on the 'interior' side of art...have fun!! " This oil painting was extremely successful with the critics and public alike. In a style typical of Waterhouse, the main female character is a lone character, placed centrally on the canvas. The surrounding landscape is hazy, as though it is not quite real, and the background figures are only discernible on close inspection, deliberatly ensuring the witch is the only image of importance. Waterhouse paid careful attention to the angles employed in this painting, balancing the circle the figure is drawing around herself by the use of the triangle-her straight arm, extended by the straight stick, held out at 45 degrees to her erect body. Traingles are also important symbols of witchcraft and the Devil. The witch's power is emphasized by the determined face, by her exclusion of the crows and frog- popular symbols representing magic- and by her command over the smoke. Instead of billowing outwards or being affected by the wind, it remains in a straight line. " The Magic Circle " is similar in composition to Waterhouse's later picture, " Miranda " ; also a woman associated with magic. The witch wears a similar dress to 'Miranda' and her face can also only be seen in profile. Unlike Frederick Sandy's portrayals of sorceresses, such as his " Medea " or " le Fay " , Waterhouse chose to make his witch's face intent and intriguing, as opposed to evil. " A little 'Gnosis' between the art and the word, wouldn't you say?As well as mirroring some very 'Jungian' inner processes! Going to look for " Miranda " now<g>!! I think this 'split' is one reason why we find so many woman attracted to studying the many goddesses these days. It is a way of coming to grips with the many facets in our psyches, even the dark and disturbing ones. Perhaps, if enough women understand their own opposing tendencies, then men will not be so confused by the feminine 'archetype'? After all, it is just another Opposite thats needs to be centered. I loved your dream! It states very clearly that this 'opposite' is at the 'center' of your psyche(the woman is situated in the center of the room). Your male friend(shadow) introduces you to this 'aspect' of your internalization of the feminine...he shows you the 'IMAGE' (the beauty) and then he shows you the 'dark inside of the light'....A stunnung dream! The beauty of the dream, is that she is already BOTH!! And this is clarified by your shadow. I think that at the time of this dream, you were a little farther down the road to joining this 'split', than you give yourself credit for! Thanks for sharing. I love sometimes to get to the 'Practical Jung' in everyday life! This split is echoed in alot of the posts around here...from religion, politics, art, etc. A very Janus faced dream for January!! This is the month of my birth and very meaningful to me..haha!!
