I am in the process of sprouting spelt for my third time so I'm no whiz at

the sprouting yet. It sounds like yours look just like mine, a little white

tail sticking out. The last two times I've made them, I've let that little

white tail get about 1/4 inch long then rinsed them and popped them in the

dehydrator. Seems like an awful lot of work to sprout the kernels, then dry

them out so you are basically back where you started at!!!

Hello Everyone:

and Debbie, I sprout all of the time. I didn't care for the

soaking grains in kefir method. They start out with a little white tip.

Then they grow longer, but be careful once they start growing they really

grow fast. My sprouts start within the first day and are usually ready by

the second day. Debbie are your wheat grains organic? I have a speculation

that this makes a difference. Seems like it took a lot longer for the

non-organic wheat to sprout.

Good Luck,

Kareemah

Hi Deborah!

Yep, that's what they look like. Just let the tail get about 1/4 inch long, and then dry them. They aren't supposed to get real long like the other sprouts.

Subject: slimy sprouts?

Howdy folks! My first time sprouting wheat - I was hoping to make bulgur, and from that to make kishk.I am at the end of my second day of the 2-3 days recommended in "the book" for sprouting wheat. I have most of the wheat doing nothing, although some have a white slimy tail sticking out of them. The tail is easy to squish; doesn't hold together like I suppose a sprout should. These are not at all like bean sprouts or alfalfa sprouts or anything else I have ever sprouted. The wheat smells good, and it has not been too wet - if anything it has been too dry. I let it soak overnight first, then dumped the water off. It has been sitting in my colander because I don't have enough sprout jars with the screen lids. I rinsed it twice a day. The top seemed quite dry, and I thought I wasn't rinsing often enough or else it was drying out too fast because it was in the colander rather than inside jars.I can't tell if the white tails are the beginnings of sprouts or the beginning of mold!!!!Do wheat sprouts look like this, or have I done something wrong? Thanks in advance,Deborah

You can also use cheese cloth to cover your sprouts. The water drains out

and keeps the seeds in. I found some that was unbleached at the health food

store the other day. Don't remember the price, but it couldn't have been

too much because I bought a package.

Hi Deborah,

I think that if you have your grains sprouting in a colander that they

indeed are drying out too much. You can use any jar at all. I had an old

plastic strainer that had stainless screening in it. My husband melted

the handle on it so.... it is now two new sprouting lids! Works like a

charm. I just cut two circles out of the screen and put them inside of my

canning rings. Sally says that you can purchase screening, but I only

found the plastic or aluminum screen at the store. Sally also suggest

rinsing your grains every few hours or a minimum of twice a day. I think

that this will help all (or at least most) of your grains to sprout.

Hey Judith,

Where are you in southwest Michigan? I am in a suburb north of Detroit?

We have a local Chapter of the Weston Price Foundation called Healthy

Traditions. I believe that there is someone interested in starting a

chapter around the Grand Rapids area. Are you near there?

It wouldn't surprise me if the non-organic wheat weren't treated to give it

a longer shelf life. That would discourage it from sprouting.

Hi Deborah,

When sprouting fenugreek seeds,I tried to slip by with just placing them in

the collander, but they too dried out,I think that there is some kind of

green house/moisture containing effect with the glass jar around them.

Good luck :)
