Guest guest
Look up Buteyko with your search engine. These are breathing exercises especially for asthmatics. They have helped a lot. Good luck! Guest guest
I actually got thru the whole night without coughing...it's the first time in a couple weeks. Of course, once I got up I started coughing but it didn't last nearly as long as previously. It was just as violent though. Keeping my fingers crossed that I'm finally coming out of this mess. I find that when I have episodes of violent coughing, I don't move around much. Keeping myself propped up with pillows in bed or on the couch is beneficial. I also get some relief from a strong eucalyptus-menthol cough drop ... and good old-fashioned Vicks vaporub. Both seem to help keep bronchial passages dilated. Of course, this is in addition to all other meds.

Guest guest
what I do when I have a bad chest cold. Layer of vicks on the chest. then a towel soaked in rubbing alchol. then a warm towel or heating pad on top of that. No one wants to be near me, but it works. ** , Stinky's caretaker** " Brigthen the corner where you are and you will light the world " Dean Koontz

Guest guest
A lot of the breathing exercises in yoga are supposed to be helpful. There's even somebody in London who has developped a special set of yoga exercises for asthmatics. I only wish I lived closer to London so I could learn them! Also, some people on another list were told to blow bubbles. You know, with that stuff youwish your kids wouldn't keep bringing home from parties. I can't attest to that one, as I've never been able to blow bubbles (difficult when you cana't see them). HOpe this helps. Eve -- `Why be difficult? Guest guest
Eve.. About bubbles..you can feel them, tho? Any kind of instrument that you blow into will do the 'Pffft' exercise for your lungs that are recommended.. C-M
Guest guest
As soon as you touch a bubble it bursts, and that's no fun, is it? But I've got a recorder somewhere; I ought to get that out and play it again. Yes, I think I'll do that. Eve -- `Why be difficult? Guest guest
actually blowing bubbles is pretty good, so is singing along wiht the car radio. builds your lung capacity. and it's really quite fun if you are stuck at a railroad crossing. ** , Stinky's caretaker** " Brigthen the corner where you are and you will light the world " Dean Koontz

ANDREA--even more fun, work toward trying to drown out the train. Drs. have said that my voice lessons (operatic training in HS cancelled due in part to asthma) have done me well, even into my 50's, esp. as I keep on practicing. another great tool comes after surgeries when they give you a contraption with a ball or cylinder to RAISE was you INHALE. That's a great one. I use it both before and after flovent, serevent and flonase. Helps put the meds deep inside. Guest guest
Hmmm, I'd better not try to drown out the train, especially as I'll be more likely to be in the train than outside it. Don't know what the passengers would think. I agree that voice training comes in handy though; I think if you've done a lot of singing you tend to be able to breathe slower generally. Which is why in my case I've never bought into the over-breathing theory.
