Guest guest
Thanks Bill. I appreciate your input. Marling Everafter Farms and Homeschool Searcy, AR Family includes Nubian goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, Angora rabbits and anything else that gets dropped off everafter@... : Hello all, : I have been reading about some people talking about being tested for : allergies. You seem to think only what you are allergic to is what : causes asthma triggers. this is not true. I was tested for allergies and : when the doc told me the results, I was surprised, because it was only a : few of the things I knew where my triggers. So I asked him about it and : he told me, allergies are triggers to asthma, but not all triggers are : allergy bassed. He used smoke as an example. No one is allergic to smoke : (even though many think they are) but it is a common trigger. They are : different. I am not allergic to mold, but it is one of my worst : triggers. So just because you don't test positive, does not mean you : should not avoid it. : : Bill in PA :
Guest guest
Bill is so right It is a really dangerous misconception that even many asthmatics have;, that allergies are the main triggers for asthma attacks. If you have asthma your symptoms may be triggered by virtually anything that floats in the air ! Smoke particles , mold spores , pollen and dew or very humid air are all comprised of tiny particles that irritate all lungs - but asthmatic lungs are very sensitive so we suffer when exposed to these things . I am a lifelong(severe) asthmatic with almost no allergies ( Docs used to call people like me 'intrinsic asthmatics ') who developed chronic asthmatic bronchitis in my late 20s and still have it 8 years later - I had to give up my exotic animal sanctuary , disband most of the critters , buy a house less than 100 yards to the ocean in a secluded area where there is not much traffic and very little boating , tile my entire house , switch my major from research bio to a non science major cant do lab ! ), take 3 telecorses and only 1 on campus courses a term plus register with disabled student services for a special private testing room that's got no smokers in it and build special habitats outdoors for my 16 year old greenwing macaw and other family members that I just cannot bear to part with ! I notice in your sig line that you live on a farm and raise goats and angora rabbits - the more you expose yourself to these irritants the worse your condition is likely to become - the hay in the barn is a big irritant , fertilizers , working in the cold , damp or rain or the hot and humid - trust me I know - I developed this chronic bronchitis while living on my exotic animal farm and the last few years have been the hardest of my life as I have had to give the life that I treasured up but my condition detioriorated to the point that I was housebound at 30 and forced to hire help to care for the critters . 6 years later I am now steroid resistant , and can thank cushings sydrome for giving me hypothyroidism , high bp , and borderline diabetes , I am now classified as a COPD patient and I cannot go back and repair the damage done ; just work to prevent further damage so that I can have a fulfilling , worthwhile life . Please forgive me if I sound gloom and doom - this is just my experience and I would not want anyone to have to travel down this same path - if you are not seeing a pulmonoligist get one and talk to him about ways to avoid / prevent worsening your condition teresa Re: Allergic & Triggers > Thanks Bill. Guest guest
- I completely understand about not wanting to be dependant on the meds - 1 of the toughest things about asthma is remembering no matter how good you feel you have to take everything right or you will be knocked down and out !!! I am a barefoot , critter lovin , organic gardenin PEASANT at heart I love to dig in the dirt , get sweaty doing manual labor and work from sunrise to sunset but I am unable to do alot of that now because I did not take proper care of myself and my stupid lungs ! You sound like you are still doing pretty well overall - keep it that way wear the ridiculous mask - get one of your kids to clean the chicken coop since that's one of the WORST things you can breathe into your lungs It took me about 7 years till iwould wear the darn things , but it really helps ! I had this idea that a positive ,can do attitude could bully my illness away and I was wrong -my meds are over 400 a month now and that's with my md giving me scads of free stuff monthly - I can send you info for the pharmaceutical companies help program for middle class folks - I had to get my meds through them for nearly a year - My atrovent was sent from the manufacturer to my pulmonoligist in 3 month supplies for me totally free - I also go my flovent 220 that way . Give me a week to locate it in this disaster of an office -we moved to our new house over the holidays and I am not unpacked yet trust yourself - if being around something irritates your lungs - avoid it because the more you expose yourself to irritants the worse your reaction will become over time . Guest guest
Wow, you sound like an identical twin. We do have a PPO which makes my meds between $5 and $25 each. However, when you are taking numerous ones, it really adds up. Rarely do I get one that is $5. My 7 year old is on the Claritin that dissolves in his mouth but I have yet to get him to take the Flonase. Hey, I have an idea. Why don't you design a really cool mask and start selling them. Kind of like on Chicago Hope where they wear the great looking head coverings. Maybe they will become trendy and we won't have to feel so stupid wearing them. <vbg> Marling Everafter Farms and Homeschool Searcy, AR Family includes Nubian goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, Angora rabbits and anything else that gets dropped off everafter@... Guest guest
i know how it is to be over weight. I am 350 and 5'9 I have asthma and 2 other lung diseases. One of the diseases caused me to be put on high doses of prednisone and i gained 100 lbs in 4 mths. nothing i could do to stop it. I weighed 210 lbs and then went down to 185 in 3 days of not eating and very sick laying in bed. I would like to be back down to the 185. but not sure that will ever happen. the white smoke they gave you was probably a breathing treatment. I take nebulizer treatments every day.
