Here are some past 5HTP emails from this list:

There's no set dose for 5HTP. I use Thorne's 50mg capsules and raise

slowly until I see benefit plateau and then go the other way, and then back

down. With such a good response on 50, that may be all you need. On a

week-end you might add another one in the morning and observe; though

non-toxic, it can cause side-effects in some kids, mostly hyperactivity or

drowsiness, sometimes agitation and irritability. His response to it sounds

awesome! Dr. JM

I have found with 5HTP that about a third of kids get a soothing effect,

helping them sleep, a third get hyper and sometimes even agitated, and a

third have no effect whatsoever. It is a precursor to tryptophan which is a

precursor to serotonin, but there are about six different steps on the way

from 5HTP to tryptophan, and sometimes it gets rerouted or off onto another

path and does not become tryptophan, which is quite sedative to most people.

I would guess it is the 5HTP, although some kids do get active on the MB-12

too, so it is important to do just one at a time to know what is causing the

insomnia. Dr. JM

and here is one site http://www.wholefoods.com/healthinfo/wholehealth/5htp.html

My son takes inositol in a product called Cenitol

http://www.metagenics.com/products/catalog/detail.asp?pid=97 at a dose equal to

250mg a day.

Thanks for the 5HTP info. Anybody have information for me about IP6? What

does it do, where can I get it, and how much should a 50-lb child get?

We have to get out of OCD land before my son drives the rest of us crazy!

Thanks-

Sue

Sue,

Some experienced parents on the chelatingkids2 list

(chelatingkids2 ) are reporting excellent effects with

inositol powder from

www.beyond-a-century.com

It is really inexpensive. Beyond a Century is a great and inexpensive

source for a lot of supplements--they have a lot of things in powder, like

idebenone, pantethine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, piracetam,

etc. If you aren't already a member of chelatingkids2

(chelatingkids2 ), you might want to join and post your

question.

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/chelatingkids2/

It is an excellent autism group, with a lot of really experienced and

helpful parents! Some of the parents have reported excellent benefits

using inositol for OCD and verbal stims.

Most inositol supplements are myo-inositol. IP6 is inositol

hexaphosphate. If you use myo-inositol to treat OCD, you need very

large amounts. IP6 is more easily absorbed, so 1200-1500 mg/day is

effective. Some of the articles I read recommended using IP6 along

with a small amount of myo-inositol (approx 200 mg/day).
