Al and ,

I cut off the end of my thumb with a paper cutter. I had too much in it and it

sucked my thumb

right in. I was running down the aisle yelling ooh, ooh, ooh and pinching the

end of it. My

coworkers brought me to the emergency room and they put some kind of gauze on it

and melted it on.

It was really hard to type for a while and I think that it took about a year

before the numbness

went away. The next day, my friends told me that my boss had gone and picked up

the piece of thumb

and brought it to the emergy room in case they wan't to sew it back on. All of

the girls were too

grossed out to pick it up so they made him do it. For having it happen there, I

didn't get much

sympathy. Pass on your stories so we can commiserate. Iris

You have a good memory ! Yes it was on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. I

was a short order cook at a luncheonette. One morning I came to work as

usual, went to cut a roll for a cheese steak and the knife went through the

roll into my hand. My boss had neglected to tell me that he sharpened my

knife after I had left the night before. I cut my hand in an area called

" No Man's Land " , which is right where the fingers attach to the hand. If

you cut tendons in that area, your fingers will never work again. I had

experimental surgery to try to repair my pinky, but it didn¹t work very

well. I am lucky that I only lost the use of my pinky. I cut 3 fingers, but

only severed the tendon completely in my pinky. I get spastic when I see

people cutting rolls into their hand. I actually think I can feel the

sensation of severing the nerves and tendons when I see someone doing it. I

know it sounds crazy. The only real loss was how it affected my guitar

playing. Oh well, it could have been worse.

Oh yuck Iris. That was not fun. I guess it wasn't reattached. Bet your

boss will never forget you!

I'm glad it wasn't worse, a. That's plenty bad enough.

Sorry about that pinky, especially since it's hampering your guitar

playing. Boo!

Ouch, Iris!!! Those sissies!

Last year was my daughter's senior year in high school. She was taking

physics and had to do the classic build a bridge with balsa wood and

glue project. She was using an exacto knife to cut the balsa wood.

I told her before she started to be very careful since the knife was so

sharp, and I got an " Oh, Mom! " with the eyeballs going toward the

ceiling. Within an hour she sliced into her thumb and was running around

the family room and kitchen spurting blood everywhere - on the couch,

the vertical blinds, the off-white carpeting, the kitchen floor, the

kitchen sink. A real Sam Peckinpah scene.

The cut was pretty deep but nice and clean. She refused to go the

emergency room with me. Luckily, she healed quickly and well and had no

lasting effects. What a scare!

Okay Iris, you asked for it.

I was driving in the worst snow storm and was on the highway about to

exit to get to my office. There was a ton of slush and dirt on my

windshield that wouldn't come off because ice had formed on the

wipers. So, like the dumb bunny that I am I rolled the window down

and reached out and pulled the wiper with my hand. My thumb was

impaled on a piece of ice jutting out and the wiper went down.

Needless to say I was screwed...LOL!

Interestingly enough it didn't really hurt. I put my hand down in my

lap and kept driving. I looked down and noticed a pool of blood.

Because I had nothing to stop the bleeding, I bent my thumb and bit

down on it to apply direct pressure. Because I nicked an artery my

mouth filled up with blood quite quickly. I needed to open the door

every minute or so and spit it out. What I was unaware of was that

everytime I put my hand up to my mouth again blood was splashing on

the side of my head.

I decided I needed to get to work and get a first aid kit before

going to the hospital. The traffic was bumper to bumper. When I

finally made it I was walking down the hall towards the bathroom and

a colleague saw me and freaked out. It looked like someone shot me in

the head. We went to the bathroom where I cleaned up and he got the

first aid kit. I wrapped it up as much as possible and went to my

office. I called a friend who worked with me and asked if he would

drive me to the hospital. On the way I called and let her know

what happened. What they ended up doing was sew it back together and

told me that I would need surgery. I want back to work (and actually

worked for a couple of hours) and them went home. Because the nerves

were severed, I needed to meet with a surgeon and had the operation

the next day.

Very exciting!!! And stupid...LOL! You wouldn't believe the number of

people, including my surgeon, who said " I do that all the time " . I am

here to tell you...DON'T!

How's that...;)

Alan

Oh, Al! I'm so sorry that happened to you. A story like that about ice

and snow makes me grateful I live in Florida. ;-)

Love you,

Carol

OUCH! That sounds like it was quite painful. We sure do brutalize

ourselves. I've never stabbed myself, but I dropped a chisel on my foot and

it stuck in my bone. That was a really painful one!

I hope you didn't have any permanent damage from the scissors. Going

completely through your hand sounds like it could have caused some damage.
