Guest guest
Help! Does anyone have any experience of treating infected eczema? Baby is eight months old, eczema started at 3 months (has not had any immunisations) and treated so far with just topical calendula and or camomile cream and flax seed oil. Atopic family history both sides. He had dry patches all over his body which have mostly gone now. What is persistent are the red itchy patches on forehead, eyebrows, cheeks and skin around ear lobes. He has occasional weeping patches around ear lobes which clear up after a couple of days and small pustules on backs of hands and thumb which don't seem to itch. Has occasional Camomile or Calendula baths. Has had a couple of URTI through winter treated with herbs but generally well, eating well - no dairy or wheat, still breast fed. All ok until wed evening, was not his usual self, breath has unusual odour, area around ears became very weepy, red, inflamed looking, very itchy. Also left wrist the same, (I thought it curious it wasn't both wrists?) very wet and itchy, forehead very itchy. By Thursday red angry rash spread to whole of face and some to chest, today chest is worse and now on neck front and back and down arms, weepy areas now dry and crusty . Wrist is looking dryer too. Difficulty sleeping due to itching. Seen GP today and of course have come home armed with Flucloxacillin, Hydrocortisone 1% for wrist and 0.5% for ears. So, what to do now, the fear of this becoming worse is inclining me to use med from the GP (this is my baby by the way), also the discomfort of itching is distressing to watch, but giving all this to my so far unpolluted baby isn't desirable as well. I'm sure this is the just another of those agonising decisions motherhood seems littered with of which way to go. Has anybody braved this out? Is the best thing to give the med and treat with herbs at same time. Would be grateful for any help and suggestions. Many thanks in advance lulu
Guest guest
Hello Lulu, I've just seen my 6 month old baby with eczema - the secondary infection cleared quickly with the constant use of Calendula + Stellaria (20g each) creams + hemp oil (10g) + 5 drops of Tea tree oil. Also, perk up the immune system with Echinacea etc. Good luck, Benn -- Benn Abdy- MCPP Medical Herbalist Windsor & London 0 or 07957 65 88
Guest guest
Thanks Benn for the quick reply, great that it has worked. That horrible pink liquid can just sit on the shelf for the moment! Guest guest
Hi Lulu I had 2 babies with nasty eczema myself and have treated many. I cannot give you an adequate explanation for it, but red ears progressing to eczematous lesions often relates to a wheat or gluten intolerance. make sure there is none in your own diet and keep the dairy products out as well. do you use herbs in the bath? I often give a mix of Stellaria, matricaria, Calendula and Viola tric. to make as a good strong infusion and add to bath water. Increase the Calendula in infection. Oats in the bath (that's raw porridge oats in an old sock if you haven't got a muslin bag) can work wonders but will cause a flare-up if he's sensitive to oats. patch test on a bit of unaffected skin before adding to the bath. marianne ==================================================== nne Last BA MNIMH, Consultant Medical Herbalist Tel/Fax: 01600 719497 www.mariannelast.co.uk baby with infercted eczema Help! Guest guest
Lulu, experiment with your diet most likely there is something in it that goes into reat milk and irritates the eczema e.g. dairy, wheat etc. Also you may want to increase your intake of EFA (hemp seed oil). My son, who has eczema, was reacting to my breast milk and improved when I reduced the amount of cheese I ate. Guest guest
Hi nne thanks very much (to as well) for all your advice. We have been away the last 2 weeks and I have changed my diet (yet again!) and excluded many more things. The only remaining wheat item was pasta and so have now removed that as well - I'm sure you are right as I had pasta last week and he had a flare the following day......so hopefully things will now improve. Do you know if it is only the gluten in wheat that's the problem or something else in it? And have you found a general rule for a time period that if a reaction is going to happen it will occur within a certain limited time period (although I guess this is very individual) ?. Had thought in children it probably happens quite quickly? He does have herbal baths but I have only tried calendula and chamomile so far, but am about to try your mix. Guest guest
Hi Lulu will miss you at conferance! re wheat/gluten. I have been exploring this with my daughters IBS with nutritionist. Seems they consider modern wheat gluten hard to digest, leads to GIT inflammation, messes up absorption and elimination, therefore increases load on liver re detoxification. I wonder if with your ingestion of wheat, one then detoxifies more via breast milk....maybe this is part of the impact on the baby. Blood group O apparantly very unable to deal with many cereals particularly wheat. Hope little one and you, soon have easier time of it. love Freeserve AnyTime - HALF PRICE for the first 3 months - Save £7.50 a month www.freeserve.com/anytime
Guest guest
Hi Lulu in my experience there's quite a variation in wheat intolerance. if it's the gluten portion he'll react to oats, rye and barley as well. a lot of people react to wheat per se but not particularly to gluten, so beware gluten-free products, which often contain deglutenised wheat (!). they also commonly contain soya and corn flour which are in themselves common allergens. and I've seen a lot of people who react to wheat bran but not to white wheat, so can take mother's pride and white pasta but not weetabix! nne ========================================== nne Last MNIMH The Herbal Dispensary for fast dispensing from herbalist to patient. dispensing@... Guest guest
thanks nne, I think it may be gluten as he seemed to react to the Rye bread I've been eating (no suspect ingredients in it) and on excluding that too eczema is much better - so my diet is now really exciting with no dairy or gluten! but, its all good experiential learning! Thinking more long term with babies, I suppose is it good to retry these foods periodically when the gut is more mature? have you found an average age or time gap to begin retrying? Guest guest
No, don't retry. a problem at this age is a problem. it may go underground for a while but will resurface again, maybe with different symptoms. marianne ========================================== nne Last MNIMH The Herbal Dispensary for fast dispensing from herbalist to patient. dispensing@...
