Guest guest
The best thing that I used to teach my son to read was to turn on the closed caption on the television. He could see the words being used, being formed with mouths, and usage. Worked wonderful. My 11 year old now reads eighth grade. CeCe Sweet teaching to read I have a nine year old moderately autistic son. I am trying to teach him to read. What is the best method to teach? Phonetic or Sight Words? With the Phonetic method he does not seem to understand the concept of blending the sounds of the letters to form words. He has learnt a few Sight Words. But then I wonder how many words can a child learn using the Sight method. Parents, educators, please let me know your experience.Roopa Donthu (mother of Suraj)
Guest guest
My child's school uses Saxon phonics and he has done very well with it. It is very rule based, repetitive and scripted. I was worried that he would have trouble with it because it uses a pretty elaborate coding system to illustrate the rules but he loves it. It also teaches comprehension from the beginning. > >Reply-To: autism-georgia >To: autism-georgia >Subject: teaching to read >Date: Tue, 01 Jan 2002 16:09:33 -0000 > >I have a nine year old moderately autistic son. It begins by teaching sounds, rather than letter names and emphasizes teaching the child NOT to stop between sounds when sounding out words so that they blend words accurately. You can buy a beginning book at any bookstore called, " Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons " by Siegfried Engelmann. I was fully trained in DI in my bachelor's and my masters and I LOVE it. You may also want to look into the Direct Instruction materials at SRA4kids.com Hope this helps, Shauna
