Hi all. I am new to the group. I actually do not suffer from Post SSSRI PSD but

my fiancé is beginning to show signs. At 18 (now 31) he was put on

antidepressants (the prescriptions did change over the years) and had been

continually taking them until April 2011 when he began discussing weaning off of

Effexor with his doctor. July 2011 he took his last dose. Once the weaning

process had begun we noticed his inability to truly last in bed. We spoke with

his doctor who assured us that with time he would begin to see his sexual

performance returning to normal. We still have yet to see an increase in his

" lasting time " . I've never felt a loss of enjoyment in bed with him as he is

lays one to please and I don't care if he lasts 2 minutes or 2 hours...I just

want him to feel confident and good about himself. We do the whole " stop and

start method " but can only do it for so long. He's recently begun talking about

going back on Effexor just to last longer in bed. He was so happy to get off of

his meds and I would hate to see him go back to them simply for this one reason.

Has anyone else found things that work to increase their performance time? We

are going to try condoms and see if that helps to decrease his sensitivity. I'm

just worried if we don't find a solution in the next couple of months he'll lose

interest in sex all together...thankfully he's still very interested but I can

tell he's more insecure about his performance.

Wow. I strongly disagree with some of the advice given by Yossi.

Consult your doctor about taking Paxil? What??? Do you know how many people

suffer from PSSD as a result of taking that drug? Her fiance is already

exhibiting sexual issues and you suggest taking another SSRI?

Don't do that. If his problems are an issue now, you can bet money they'll get

worse if he takes another SSRI.

I suggest try waiting for a while. Don't panic and start taking other drugs,

injections, etc. Relax. Encourage him to get lots of exercise and to eat

healthy. Be supportive and positive with each other. Talk, and try to reduce

his stress.

> Regardless of the definition of what your fiance has, good solutions for

lasting longer are available. First, consider a short-term medication, that is,

a pill he takes before sex and not on a daily basis. This way the chance of

getting PSSD are very low (perhaps non-existent).

> Consult your doctor about taking on-demand clomipramine (Anafranil)or

paroxetine (Paxil), which are very effective for PE. Also, consider taking

on-demand tramadol (Tramal), an opioid analgesic that may prolong significantly

the time to ejaculation.

>

> You may also want to try topical anesthetics such as lidocaine/prilocaine

(EMLA). These creams reduce temporarily genital sensitivity and are thus helpful

for lasting longer.

>

> If these don't work, based on the fact the your fiance has taken

antidepressants for many years without developing PSSD, consider going back to

Effexor - but be sure not to increase the dose! ANY increase in dosage may mean

increased risk for PSSD!

>

> If none of the above seems right for you, consider intracavernous injections.

Yes, that's injecting the penis with a substance that induces erection. That's

not as painful as it sounds. The erection lasts much time (depending on dose,

but say 1 hour), regardless of ejaculation.

when one stops taking antidepressants, and premature ejaculation is very common

with quitting SSRIs / Effexor. Did he have PE before taking Effexor? if not,

it's probably a discontinuation symptom, that may improve spontaneously with

time (but might not).

>

> It seems, however, that he doesn't have PSSD, which is the persistence of

sexual dysfunction that began while taking antidepressants beyond quitting the

medication. Common symptoms of PSSD include severe loss of libido, erectile

dysfunction and genital anesthesia, and fortunately it seems that your fiance

has none of the above.

Mike,

Thank you. I agree...my fiancé and I both want medication to be the last resort.

He's a healthy guy who works out 5 days a week. We're hoping that with time that

things will get better. If not then we'll deal with that when the time comes.

A significant number of individuals in this group seem to have developed PSSD

after having been on an SSRI for a while, stopping it without PSSD, then going

on to develop PSSD after a second round of SSRI therapy, even with the SAME SSRI

as taken the first time. So I don't think we can safely assume PSSD would not

develop if he resumes effexor.

Also, I believe, but am not sure that Tramadol acts on the serotonin system.

I would also encourage refraining from use of drugs and give the body some more

time to recover.
