I googled that.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001391/

No mention of high prolactin levels; no mention of being related to breastfeeding, though it *is* related to pregnancy.

Since prolactin levels gradually drop with breastfeeding, still not sure why she needs to wean. I would be asking for more detailed information, if I were this mother.

And here's info from the Mayo Clinic:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pseudotumor-cerebri/DS00851/DSECTION=risk-factors

Both this site and the previous one I sent list birth control pills and pregnancy as risks for the condition. Both of these cause high levels of estrogen and progesterone. Though they didn't specify that those hormones are responsible for this condition, breastfeeding keeps both of those hormones at lower levels. Again, I would be asking for more info and/or seeking a second opinion.

Thanks Dee, the mother has now had three opinions....all telling her to wean immediately or risk surgery.  I am going to pass on the information.Pam

What is really sad is if she weans immediately and has to have the surgery anyway.

What kind of symptoms is she having related to the tumor?

Is nobody suggesting treatment with drugs instead of surgery?  I am surprised - it seems like they are coercing her to abandon breastfeeding before exploring any other alternative. See my other post.Sharon
