Guest guest
In addition to my hospital work, I also am a WIC BF Peer Counselor Lead 1 day a week...I've learned a lot about WIC this last year... Fascinates me that WIC provides powdered infant formula to mothers of preterm infants and newborns! Speaking to my certifier and RD friends, not 1 of them described their clients as routinely safely preparing formula...and unfortunately....not 1 of them knew the boil and use warm recommendations from the WHO. When pediatricians tell mothers to use tap water...it's difficult to send the correct message. This almost makes me want to add a check box to my documentation that indicates when I review safe formula preparation technique for times when (yes...gasp....)I have to recommend formula because mom has insufficient breastmilk to support their baby's growth... We use commercially sterile in the hospital setting and in our outpatient clinic but the parents don't seem to use it...it is so costly for families!!
