I have a mom (permission to post) who has had a host of problems. I have been working with her off and on for about three months. She jokes that she ought to just put me on retainer. :)

Issue one - She had thrush, followed Newman's protocol including a course of diflucan and felt like she had gotten full relief. However, she feels like any time she stops taking the grapefruit seed extract, the yeast symptoms begin to return. She is taking good quality probiotics and is generally avoiding simple carbs in an effort to keep the yeast at bay. I can't find any information that would indicate it would be a problem for her take the grapefruit seed extract long term but mom is rightly concerned that she can't seem to keep the yeast at bay without it. Complicating issue: mom has nipple vasospasm, has been treating with heat with some success but is also concerned that she could be mistaking vasospasm pain for yeast pain. I have suggested she have her mik cultured for yeast and consider nifedipine.

Issue two - Infant has had bloody stools and dr suspected dairy intolerance. Mom removed dairy, infant's stools improved. About one week into her "no dairy" diet, mom accidentally ate some sausage that contained lactose. Infant's bloody stools returned. However, at the same time mom started the no-dairy, she also took herself off of the grapefruit seed extract. About the time the dairy slip-up happened, she also felt like the yeast started to come back so she started the grapefruit seed extract again. Even though she has stringently avoided dairy since then, blood is still present in the stool.

Mom plans to go on a full scale elimination diet to see if there are other food sensitivities but is wondering if the grapefruit seed extract could be responsible for the infant's continuing bloody stool. Anyone heard of this?

As an aside, mom is an oral surgeon and dad is allergy doc, so very bright, very well read, fairly Western med mindset but open to alternative options. Mom had a history of dairy allergy as a child but felt like it was no longer an issue as an adult. With the struggle with yeast, the infant's bloody stools and mom's hx of allergy, I'm concerned about her gut health. I have r/o TT in the baby and mom has no sign of any nipple trauma that could indicate clamp down by the baby.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

As to the other issues for this mom. As a dentist, I imagine her body has been exposed to a lot of toxins. I doubt an elimination diet will do much for her. She needs to heal her gut and the baby's simultaneously. You can't just replace flora--you need to heal the intestinal lining as well. I would be surprised if gluten intolerance is not an issue here as well. Vasospasm are just more evidence of gut damage. She cannot treat symptoms--she needs to do the work and heal her gut.
