Guest guest
Gayle, I wondered what your DAN was hoping to accomplish medically/behaviorally with the Amantadine? I believe this has been used with some Alzheimer's patients and also Dr. Hallowell in " Drive to Distraction " has said he has heard of good responses anecdotally with it for ADHD. Thanks, Anne > > We've just finished our second full day of Amantadine 100mg BID, the > antiviral our DAN! doc chose. Guest guest
Anne, I'm not sure why the decision for Amantadine in lieu of Valtrex. My son is technically not on the spectrum, he's a classic case of PANDAS. I was lead to the DAN! approach after trying to piece together myself what was happening with my son. All of it makes sense and I now refer to PANDAS as an episodic experience on the Autism spectrum. That's just my opinion but I can certainly tell you that my son, when in a PANDAS episode and kids on the spectrum have MUCH in common. Since traditional medical interventions have done nothing to relieve his suffering I've focused on the DAN! protocol and we're seeing gains that have previously eluded us. Now I'm seeing the backlash of antivirals without a strong antifungal, a topic frequently discussed here. I've appealed to my DAN! this morning for another round of Fluconazole and I'm wondering what I'll do if it's denied for some reason. Guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I'll happily receive any advice you'd care to give. Many thanks, Gaylenycbyline wrote: Gayle,I wondered what your DAN was hoping to accomplish medically/behaviorally with the Amantadine? Guest guest
Gayle: Amantadine is used off-label for Alzheimers due to its effects on glutamate/dopamine (not because of its anti-viral properties). The OCD/anxiety could maybe be result of the medication’s affect on neurotransmitter balance (or imbalance). Just a thought. Google it, there is info on its neurological affects. Guest guest
Our son's Dr. gave Amantadine after we tried Valtrex for 3+ months with no results. Its given for flu so we thought hey, why not during flu season? The Amantadine was a nightmare! We only lasted 2.5 weeks. He lost his appetite, became constipated, but most of all regressed in therapy and got in trouble at school, which he has never done before (age 4). We gave Diflucan for 10 days during that, but we have had Diflucan before with good results. We're also not sure, but first noticed staring spells that may have been the small subtle seizures. It took him several weeks to come back from that one. Has anyone else tried Amantadine? - Theresa
