Guest guest
I've been lurking on this board reading all the posts and this is my first one. I'll try to keep it short. My husband, age 54,was diagnosed 3 years ago with cirrhosis due to alcohol use.He is currently on the transplant list(since Jan.2007).He has had TIPS done due to severe acites and has been in the hospital many many times due to hepatic encepelothopy(sp?) since his diagnosis, even tho he takes lactulose. For the past 2 months he has been falling quite a lot because he is so weak and this past Sunday morning he fell backwards down 10 steps and broke his collarbone(he broke a rib on August 1)and has been in the hospital ever since.I have to place him in a rehab facility or nursing home because he's not strong enough to come home and I could never take care of him with this injury. All he does is sleep,he can't even feed himself, he's that weak. His amonia level is ok but the doc said his blood tests are worse than they were a month ago. Now for my questions....how long can you live after diagnosis if a liver doesn't become available....what are the things that I should look for to tell me the end is near...is it painful at the end??? Any advice or answers would be greatly appreciated.
