Jaye, I don't have references but my dd used progesterone during her second pregnancy right up until the 8th month and she experienced breast changes and was able to breastfeed and only supplement with donor milk a small amount here and there. She also was on domperidone, herbs and pumped to increase her supply. She has PCOS/insulin resistance and has worked with Marasco via phone and email re increasing supply with her first and using progesterone for the second. If you'd like more details, be glad to share privately.

My info on progesterone is not coming back into my head – I used to know how it worked with low supply and such. I have permission to post: I am working with a mom who is having twins (babies 4 & 5) and is on progesterone shots to sustain the pregnancy. She had relatively uneventful pregnancies with her first 3 – but had major issues with milk supply and it took months of effort, SNS, pumping, herbs, etc to get enough milk to not have to supplement with each baby. I believe she likely has a hormonal issue and we will be ruling out hypoplasia next week when I see her for a pre-natal consult. She saw an LC a few years back with her last baby and they did NO investigation of possible causes for the low supply. Now she is kinda irritated that it could have been done to figure out the problem. She had no idea…now she wants to know what is going on with her body and how to fix it. Struggling with a supply for one baby is bad enough – but for twins?? She is really worried. Anyway – I remember reading somewhere about progesterone and milk supply…I’ll be researching in Counseling the Nursing Mother today, but was also looking for some more resources not only for me but for mom. Any other resources are appreciated!Warmly,Jaye Jaye Simpson, CLC, IBCLC, CIIM, MoMBreastfeeding Networkwww.breastfeedingnetwork.net

Marasco has posted that it helps to remain on the progesterone throughout the pregnancy. I'm not sure if just through 8 months, or all the way through. But she says that really helps to develop ductwork and milk supply, rather than discontinuing the progesterone when they are sure the pregnancy can be maintained without it.
