Guest guest
Hi Nedra, I have not used Medifast, but I checked it out. It contains soy protein in most of the meals, the BAD soy, which Hashis need to totally steer clear of. HTH, ~Bj > > > Anyone have any experience with using Medifast with Hashimoto's? Guest guest
When I was diagnosed I was told to steer clear of these products by both my Doctor and the pharmacist due to the soy in them not being good for someone with Hashimoto's Disease. I didn't ask further questions, I just did what they said, especially the pharmacist who was adamant it could harm me if I drank them (I used to drink the Costco diet milkshake/drink one for meals). Don't know if this helps or not. > > > > > > Anyone have any experience with using Medifast with Hashimoto's? Guest guest
Hi Nedra, What you need to be careful about is that soy is a goitrogen and can reduce hormone production. Goitrogens are foods that can interfere with thyroid function and cause goiters or growths on the thyroid to increase in size. Soy can block how your body absorbs and processes iodine. Iodine is essential for efficient hormone production. Also, soy binds to T4 in thyroid drugs and blocks T4 hormone. Over 90% of soy is genetically modified, plus most alarming is that soy has the highest level of pesticides contamination of any consumed food. The anti-nutrients in soy protein isolate –genetically modified soy-- the key ingredient in most soy foods, imitate other foods such as dairy, meat, and baby formulas -- almost all brands of soy milk contain soy protein isolate as does soy meat, and soy baby formulas. As you may well already know, soy proteins called isoflavones have many of the same properties as estrogens, phytoestrogens. The big question appears to be whether women who regularly consume isoflavones could be inadvertently encouraging the > growth of breast cancer cells. Ever notice that the amount of > isoflavones isn't listed under the products nutritional info. To find out multiply the amount of protein listed by three. For example, if a serving of protein is 10 grams you are getting 30 mg of isoflavones. Fermented SOY -miso, tempeh, and natto- is OK it's the unfermented soy that is the problem... we must stay away from highly concentrated and processed unfermented soy products! Guest guest
Hi Bj, Would this include Genistein? This ingredient is in my liquid Vit D. 10mg per tsp. I take 1-3 tsp per day. I also keep meaning to ask about DIM. Would this be a problem? Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Liz, In one word -- Y E S ! If my memory serves me correctly, 8 mg daily of Genistein was injected in mice, which produced serum genistein levels comparable to those reported in soy-fed (human) infants. This dose caused significant thymic (thymus) and immune changes. You appear to be taking over 3 times that much! Genistein also inhibits TPO, a enzyme made by the thyroid. There are quality vitamin d supplements WITHOUT soy. According to researchers, DIM supplementation has been shown effective in amounts that are equal to those obtainable from our diet -- 0.3 mg per day. So, ISTM it would be easier to eat these vegetables in their natural state. Some scientists say the thyroid would be influenced ONLY if these vegetables were eaten too close to the thyroid medication times. So this is a personal issue – about diet and supplementation preferences. Also, not all thyroid patients are at risk for goiter from eating broccoli, but just like all foods moderation is always a good practice. I eat broccoli but always in moderation along with some other goitrogenic foods. BUT, I don't eat SOY whatsoever because it has numerous issues. To be clear I do NOT have a goiter or nodules and never have, so I do NOT have the risk that many other thyroid patients have. If you have or are at risk of goiter or nodules then DIM would probably be a much better choice, IMHO. And it's probably best to take DIM away from any thyroid medication.
