In defense of gentian violet: this cheap (a lifetime supply in a drugstore costs

$5) remedy is time tested, penetrates more layers of skin, and attacks more

strains of yeast. It is a wonderful back-up when nystatin fails.

Coconut oil is reported to be good also...and doesn't stain.

Gentian violet verdoses are induced in the literature in mice, hamsters, and by

IV injection. In humans, the way to toxicity is overdose.

What has proved effective in my practice is to paint baby mouth and mom's nipple

and areolas once (dip q-tip into bottle as a paintbrush). Wait 2 days. Repeat.

Repeat this cycle for 2 weeks.

warmly,

Nikki

For me because of a reported case of obstructive laryngotracheitis (2 week old

infant), carcinogenic properties (yes in animals,) disruption to the

gastrointestinal tract, irritation to mucous membranes, and advisement against

applying to open wounds, and thankfully ease of availability of other approaches

which appear to be effective and lack these side effects, I no longer recommend

it.

I wouldn't refuse to counsel a mother on its use if she desires to explore this

option, it's just not an approach I generally recommend. I have listened to a

lot of people who were under the assumption that 'gentian violet' as used for

thrush, was a plant. They don't realize that it is a lab/histology dye.

I get mine from a health food store close to me in Concord, , but you can

also get it at Peppercorn in Plymouth, also Hannaford in the natural food

section.. pure virgin, cold pressed is the best.. I recommend scooping out

enough for treating nipples and diaper area into small jars and then using the

rest for cooking or baking.. it is expensive but not if compared to other

treatments and is versatile and tastes good plus its good for the brain..can you

tell I'm a fan?!

Do you use it in place of butter?

Absolutely true, but I also talk to mothers about making it work with what you have.  Such as, depending on the height she needs, push her diaper bag (laid flat or folded over or whatever height works) or purse under her elbow or a wadded-up receiving blanket under her forearm or wrist.  I talk about alternatives because, you're right, she feels like she has to stay home if she has to take half the house with her whenever she leaves.  I don't want her to feel confined to her house.

And, as to bottles, I also don't recommend them when talking about what mom should be getting before the baby is born.  I should have specified that in my previous post.  I talk about bottles when we need to supplement (of course, I talk about alternatives too) or mom is asking about returning to work.

I never recommend APNO--it has ingredients I would not like to see babies

ingesting , can break down nipple tissue and is unnecessary. GV is coal

tar--NEVER recommend it. I have been recommending coconut oil for about a decade

now--have had no negative feedback. I make other suggestions for allergic moms.

It's OK to paint on an umbilical cord stump to prevent a fungal infection while it's drying. It is not OK to paint in a baby's mouth or on mom's nipples if she is breastfeeding! Very toxic!!
