Dee,I remember reading this.  I think Marasco brought this up.  It is just theory at this point but a good one.  I have not heard or seenanything more on this.

Something is amiss with all the PTTs we are seeing.  :(PTT and gut health is the main problems that I see.Grace-- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Grace Magill ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ " Mothers have as powerful an influence over the welfare of

Hello, Celina.

The discussion was not that the tongue-ties were caused by folic acid deficiency, but that perhaps with everyone taking folic acid to prevent neural tube defects, there is too *much* folic acid in the mothers, causing the tongue not to separate from the floor of the mouth properly. Just conjecture, but an interesting theory. Of course, the post by Ann , showing the timing of folic acid supplementation of breads and vitamins, and the descriptions, found in early editions of LLL's Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, of babies who might have posterior tongue ties would seem to belie this theory.

I'm inclined toward toxic overload and/or genetics but the folic acid theory is interesting I've helped many moms with tt'd babies over the past 3 years and folic acid deficiency wouldn't be likely for 3 of the moms who were very well nourished with a diet high in folic acid as they were trying to get pregnant...but who knows.. Genetics is big. Re the toxins - those can cause all kinds of defects (as shown in the effect of dioxins on the reproductive system of the beluga whales in the St. Lawrence and alligators in the Everglades)... and then there is the fact that we are only now beginning to see the effects of generations of not breastfeeding..so all these women giving birth now have digestive systems that were never properly developed..were exposed to higher toxin levels and no doubt, lower folic acid levels thanks the the SAD. it will have an effect. It would be worth it to ask all women who call us with tt'd babies if they were

breastfed, if their mothers were breastfed, if they have any family history of tt or lip tie and where they grew up. Then send all the info to one database that someone should be kind enough to establish (NOT IT! finger on nose..)

Re: genetics - Just recently asked my husband to show me his mouth.. (after 32 1/2 years of being married!).. he has a really tight lip tie (thanks !) and is slightly tongue tied.. looks like I had a tongue tie release (looks like tissue was cut) and had a lip tie, all 4 daughters had lip tie, at least one was tt'd.. have to look at the rest.. So maybe what we are also seeing is the natural spreading of tongue tie due to tt'd persons going forth and multiplying.. I have suggested to my daughters that they examine the mouths of any persons they are planning on procreating with... After looking at my husband's mouth, I'm blaming all my breastfeeding difficulties on him:>)

You know, its probably going to be a result of coffee or chocolate or something else we love to consume and we're all going to hate the results.. of course.. I'm beyond childbearing now, so it won't bother me too much... LOL

On another note, big petition going around to bring breastfeeding back to Sesame St. but alas, one of their corporate sponsors is Earth's Best, owned by Hain Celestial, manufactured by PBM Nutritionals who manufacture all the formulas sold in stores in the US.. is there any wonder that we haven't seen the likes of Buffy Ste. Marie nursing her baby for the last decade or two?!
