Guest guest
Maurice, When I worked for Maybelline Cosmetics in the mid to late 70's we used Abitol from Hercules and Foral in some of our mascaras. Abitol, which is abietyl alcohol is a sensitizer. It is one of the primary components of rosin. Foral is an abietic acid ester and is less problematic than Abitol but in sensitive individuals it will elicit an allergic response. Both Abitol and Foral are excellent waterproofing aids in mascaras and eyeliners. Was planning to play around with liquid soap but got too close to getting ready for the rush and other little problems popping up to deal with that I had to put this on the back burner until after the holiday. However, Rosin is said to make liquid soap feel creamier and richer in liquid soaps. I don't see why it would not work in bar soap as well. You might write to Failor and ask if she has used it in bar soap, and if so how she used. I got mine from the Chemistry Store, but I suspect I overpaid for it....but I was also planning to begin experimenting early then another supply can two weeks late. Sigh. Guest guest
Is this perhaps why I could never wear make up in my makeup discovering days? Mascara made my eyes itch and burn. I'm not sure if it still does, afraid to wear it. 'Tis not good to be wearing mascara and rubbing your eyes unconsciously all day. Not only does the irritation get worse but one will elicit strange looks from all around her. Of course it takes several hours before anyone takes pity on such a person and tells them they look like a raccoon. -Ilene > Abitol from Hercules and Foral in some of our mascaras. Guest guest
Ilene, I remember the first time I wore a mascara I was developing. Yes I am a man and have no problem with my sexuality but as my boss explained to me, if I am developing something that a consumer should wear shouldn't I also be able to evaluate properly too? Well I was very inexperienced in application to say the least and I irritated my eyes severely. I had to see our company doctor as a result. It was transient irritation but it also gave me a perspective on what can happen in consumer use. Please note that this was an experimental formula I was developing and not a marketed product. When I later worked for a company specializing in hypoallergenic products and again wore one of my developmental products I did not have a reoccurrence of the earlier problem. Maybe I became more adept in applying my mascara.<VBG> From a sensitivity to irritation perspective, the eye area is one of the most sensitive areas on the body. It is not just mascaras that can cause problems but all eye products including eyeliners, eyeshadows, eye creams, eye makeup removers, etc... If any of them get into your eyes they can cause serious problems of irritancy but even worse problems can arise if they are contaminated from inadequate preservation. When I was working in the Haircare Lab at Max Factor (Hollywood), I remember seeing guys in the Cosmetic Lab wearing all sorts of makeup all the time. Personal use-testing of any cosmetic or toiletry is a quick and quite effective way of evaluating product performance. Maurice
