Guest guest
You aren't going to believe this, but Boone is adding. I know he doesn't know what adding is, but he's doing it.How do I know he's adding? I found out when I was trying to teach him about telling time. He's fascinated with the timer on the microwave, so I let him play with the clock settings. He's always adjusting the clock on my computer, so I was hoping to get him to understand about time. He can tell the time at the top of the hour, quarter after, half past and quarter till, but he doesn't really understand the rest of it.He punched in 8:25 on the digital microwave clock. So, I showed him 8:25 on a regular clock.I said,"Eight twenty five."He said, "Thirteen."I said, "No. Eight twenty five."He said, "No. Eight, Five, Thirteen.""OK," I said. "You're right. Eight and five do make thirteen."Then I tried to count the second and minute marks on the clock and he lost interest. So I thought I would show him a calculator, just to see. I showed him 1+1=2, 2+2=4, etc., up to 5+5.He couldn't get the concept of using the plus and equal keys, but punched in 3,6,9 and said, "three, six, nine."I was floored. He isn't interested in the calculator, since it won't work the way he wants it to.I asked him what 3 plus 6 was and he looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. He decided he wanted to type his color words and told me to go away.I don't think Boone's skills are diminishing with increased language. I think we won't really have a clue as to how much he knows until he can really talk.Sissi -- amazed on a daily basis
