Guest guest
To those of you who have grain mill questions: I bought myself an All-Grain Mill as a wedding present for myself in 1983. It still works wonderfully. Once I bought another mill, the Magic " Whisper " Mill, and it was so noisy that I packed it up and returned it immediately. Also, The All-Grain mill's flour is much finer because it uses stones instead of blades. I had bought the other mill because I had thought there was something wrong with my All Grain, but it turned out that I had forgotten the instructions and moved the adjustment lever too far to the right. In any case, the distributor would have repaired the mill or made any adjustments needed. But it was not needed because the All-Grain is in fact a very simple machine. While I wouldn't say the All Grain is quiet, it is much more tolerable than blade types. The flour is as fine as silk. Grains must be dry but if the stones get gunked up, running popcorn through will clean them. Or you can use a slightly coarser setting. All Grain Stone Ground Mills Horizon Marketing Division P.O. She also is looking for an Excalibur so maybe she'll buy both from you.. I wish I could afford one of those mills.. any quantity discounts :-)? Give a call! > > I have a manual stone burr old-time grinder that I bought from Lehman's or a similar-type catalog. It's supposed to easily mount to any countertop, but what it doesn't mention is that it'll quickly gouge big holes in it. After destroying our snack bar, we attempted to make it work by putting pieces of wood inside the clamps, but then the whole unit would shift around too much. It is very difficult to grind wheat and anything harder is impossible (like corn). If you follow the recommendations and loosen the grinder up for easier grinding, you end up with barely cracked grain. I think I paid $100 for it 8 years ago. -What a pain! The Family hand base is easy to operate and fastens securely. > > I also owned a K-Tec. I was pretty happy with it except for the NOISE! I DID wear ear protection when using it. -Some of those things can be outrageously loud that's for sure. > > I really like the idea of the Family Grain Mill because I have the sneakin' suspicion that the juice is going to stop one day and we'll have to get our grinding arms in shape. It's nice to be able to use electricity while we have it, but be prepared for the eventuality that we may not always have it. -I agree - plus if you have more than one attachment you can have two appliances set up simultaneously - we have the grain mill attachment on the motorized base and the flaker mill set up on the hand base, so they're both always ready to go.
