Guest guest
Tune in tomorrow morning at 6:40 am if you are up nursing or birthing! Izaguirre will interview me as a representative of La Leche League on the topic of Breastfeeding in Public. This was brought on by the nursing mother in Target who was asked to move to the dressing room - and the follow up Nurse In at over 100 Target stores. I hope to offer a balanced and reasonable look at both views. You can go to the Channel 8 Daybreak Facebook page to offer input. Guest guest
Dear Sister LC-PP's: http://www.wfaa.com/news/daybreak click on video Since I posted about today's TV appearance, I thought I'd share the link as well. I really meant to post this on a local yahoo group and had already hit 'send' before I realized I was on this group list...sorry. I am a long-time LLL Leader and also an LC since 1987. The interview was held in Dallas, Texas, USA - News 8 Daybreak at 6:40am this morning. I was somewhat frustrated by the lack of time to put forth a statement as the time to answer questions filled their space. So -- I went to their facebook page and posted the following: __________________________________________________________________ Note to Izaguirre - News 8 Daybreak Thank you for having me in to talk a bit about breastfeeding in public. I was disappointed that the questions asked took the time I wanted to share a few words - so if you don't mind...I'll share them here. " Our Society has changed since the inception of La Leche League in 1956 - when the initiation rate of breastfeeding was about 25% and now it is about 70%. So - Science acknowledges what women have always known...that breastfeeding is the Gold Standard for infant health and nutrition. Breastfeeding is our Biological Norm. What has not changed, is a baby's need for mother as his source of food and comfort. So - the dilemma is in meeting baby's need for nuturing while showing respect for those around the nursing couple. It is appropriate to cover the private parts of our bodies so as not to offend others. We can encourage new nursing mothers to sit in a straight chair in front of a full length mirror to practice nursing discreetly. They can then see what others will see and can maintain some modesty. Remember that babies needs are intense and immediate, and if mothers are not able to respond to those needs - a fussy crying baby is even more of a distraction to the public. :-) Thanks again for airing this relevant information for the common good. Guest guest
I don't want you to feel attacked, but I have to say this. The words "Nursing Discreetly" are like nails on a chalkboard to me. It reminds me of a local mom who was hassled for breastfeeding "in the most indiscreet manner" at a local hospital. I met this woman in mid July and the only parts of her body that were exposed were her hands and face. I found it hard to believe she could be indiscreet if she tried. The problem is everyone has their own definitions of what discreet means. Some think it means being careful to keep an eye on baby as to cover quickly if baby pops off. Others think it means no one can know you are engaged in the act and are relegated to a bathroom stall - or better yet- never breastfeed outside your home. I feel we need to take the word "discreet" out of our language when talking about nursing in public. Moms are meeting the needs of their babies and if they have to worry about offending someone they are more likely to quit. My own sister quit nursing her youngest because nursing under a cover at Thanksgiving was too difficult and she hated being in (self induced) isolation in a back room. I nursed in full view and if it bothered family members they could go to a back room. Funny, no one ever took that option.
