Guest guest
what a good movie Klara! Man did I bawl! I'm such a cry-baby! It was so touching. I really enjoyed all the characters. Tell me is it supposed to be based on a true story? Now a completely unrelated question for the group. Cellulite. I have a client who is overweight and has cellulite on her thighs, butt, and even in her calves! I had no idea this was even possible. I know very little of cellulite. Is there a way to get rid of it. In the past year of working with her she has completely revamped her diet and is vegetarian. Other than exercise does anyone know how to get rid of cellulite? Guest guest
I adored that book...it was what I was reading when Finn was born so my memories are of babymooning, lounging in bed, nursing and reading Memoirs of a Geisha. The film was very well done, too. I just wish they had chosen a Japanese actress to play the main role. Movie Who mentioned renting Memoirs of a Geisha? Was it Klara? Guest guest
I judge a movie by how hard I laugh or how many tissues I go through - and a super big plus when it makes me reflect on life. You're not a cry-baby, the movie was effective!!!! If it doesn't touch you, what's the point of seeing a movie? My husband tells me it is NOT based on a true story, but for me that doesn't make it less worthy. Nor does it matter who, chinese or japanese plays the role, it isn't less authentic for me. Can't help on cellulite. But I also received a post of someone needing help - oh Bruce, we are in need of that macrobiotic encyclopedia - I have no idea where to send people for advice other than look for a good counselor and put their post up on all the sites, which I may do here also (forward their post). First two days of trip pleasant, third day, it's already enough. I found the Whole Foods store, greatly enjoyed the sample rasberries by the door as entering, but the overwhemness of it all just was too tiring. and who needs to wade through all that stuff before getting to the good food? Oh I did see those drinks you guys have been posting about, and for one minute I was tempted, but my motto of late is simplify - more is not always healthful. Oh and I got more sleep finally, only woke at four today instead of two, much better. and since my husband was on the computer, I went out for a walk. Pretty boring - wondered why in a desert climate people don't do as the japanese and have rock gardens or do beautiful designs with sand - lots of very dead looking front yards or yes, healthy grass, but then I wonder how much water is needed to support that. oh oh, hear some negativity there??? I think the excitement of newness has passed. I'm not a good tourist for more than two days. Well, still haven't done the strip, wonder if that will excite me or just make me wish to be home even more. I noticed all the ads on the billboards stress fun, fun, fun - how empty it starts to feel after a while. I'm not against a joyous life, but somehow this isn't the same. Guest guest
I really loved watching it. One of the main reasons is that I have walked those very streets where they filmed it, and have seen the geisha walking with clients in and out of these very private and exclusive establishments. The area in Kyoto where they still work is timeless and beautiful, with cobblestone streets and incredible gardens tucked away in the most unexpected places. The other reason it was fun to watch is because one of the actors, the one who plays the nasty Baron, lives in Honolulu and is a part of the healing arts community in Honolulu. One woman I know said she didn't like it because to her, it was a story about how the main character just became obsessed and gave up her whole life to " please her father " . That was an interesting perspective. Here in Hawaii and in Japan people refused to see the movie because the main characters are played by Chinese women. Very controversial! > Who mentioned renting Memoirs of a Geisha? Was it Klara? > Well I'm having an 'off' night tonight so I just went out to rent it! Guest guest
interesting comment.I too thought it was very strange that they used Chinese and not Japanese women to play the parts. I noticed that right away. I can understand how they feel. I wouldn't be impressed either. Still it was a good movie. I was later surprised to find out not only was the movie fictional but that it was written by a white male. " ...become the change you envision." Guest guest
No, don't get me wrong, it didn't lessen how authentic the movie was for me either. I just don't understand when they cast one ethnicity to play another. " ...become the change you envision." Guest guest
It's been a while since I read the book, but it seemed very true to the novel from my memory. > > Did you find the movie was very different from the book? > > > > > " ...become the change you envision. Guest guest
pretty good one for a dude huh? It reminds me of that part in As good as it gets where Jack Nicholson's part answers a question of how do you get a women so well and his reply is I take away all rhyme and reason (or something to that effect) , it is interesting what you pointed out to us. I did very much enjoy that movie too. I have been wanting to do Japan for quite some time already. One of these years................ > > Who mentioned renting Memoirs of a Geisha?
