By the way, the pediatrician/baby's doc is the provider that is the final word on when the mom can and cannot breastfeed (well, the MOTHER is the final word as long as she has the correct information to make an informed decision.) You can also look it up on Lactmed. (Just Google it). Jan Barger, RN, MA, IBCLC, FILCA Wheaton IL Hi Ladies,I have a client who is having a hernia repair who is nursing her 3 month old. Her surgeon is adamant that she wait 24hrs to nurse. He is disregarding all LLL info. Does anyone have any resources that are more "professional" lol? I checked bfmed but there wasn't a protocol for post op.Thanks!Gini Robbins IBCLCWhole Woman Lactation
Guest guest
You can use Hale or BFMed if you know the medication they are concerned about. Just being "post op" isn't really something we can say is safe with breastfeeding or not, but we do have documentation about every medication they will be using. We had a mother get info to pump and dump from hospital anesthesia and she was able to show them info from Hale that was not really disputable regarding the lactation risk levels. Guest guest
Hi! Of course besides the fact that the anesthetic agents used for a hernia repair or c/s under general are the same. What do mothers do when they wake up from a c/s under general? They breastfeeding their babies! ;)Irene Cullagh, RN IBCLCBreastfeeding & Beyond LLCWallingford, CTSent from my iPhone Medications and Mother's Milk. Guest guest
Find the active agents within the general and look them up in Lactmed. Sponsored by the National Institute of Health. Just Google lactmed for the ridiculous URL and share it with the MD. I usually just look up each med and copy and paste the Lactmed info into a Word document and share it with the MD. This is a baseless recommendation to wait to breastfeed. > > Hi Ladies, > I have a client who is having a hernia repair who is nursing her 3 month old.
