Guest guest
Hello all, Has anyone had any success in treating patients with polycystic ovaries? I have recently started treating 4 patients who have been diagnosed as having this condition. All have a similar symptom pattern: secondary amenorrhoea or oligomenorrhoea, hirsuties, acne and weight gain. 3 of the 4 patients were prescribed Dianette (anti-androgen) and although it reduced the hirsutism, all have stopped taking it due to side effects (headaches, depression, nausea and break-through bleeding). The treatment aims for all 4 patients is to regularise periods, reduce the hirsuties, obesity and acne and 2 the 4 patients also want it to restore ovulation as they want to become pregnant. I am unclear as to whether to use Vitex or not due to its possible effect of increasing LH levels. Herbal literature states that tinctures of Serenoa serrulata, Paeonia lactiflora, sinensis and Glycyrrhiza glabra may be indicated. Can any one from experience tell me: 1) what sort of doses and combination of herbs are needed 2) what the expected time scale of treatment is necessary for results 3) what is the likelihood of success in achieving each of these treatment aims. I would also be grateful if any one has any references relating to research on herbs for the treatment of PCO.
