Misread or misinterpreted medical abbreviations can result in patient harm.

This presentation introduces a " Do Not Use " list and will show you how to

apply the new abbreviation policy used by national health safety

organizations.

11:30 - 12:30 Topic: " Prefixes, Suffixes, and False Cognates in Medical

Terminology " (English/Spanish)

2:00 - 3:00 Topic: " Teaching Cultural Competence to Health Care Providers:

Beyond Stereotypes in the Latino Population "

Presenter: Lori Sciadini

Cultural differences can create difficult situations in the medical arena.

This presentation addresses those difficulties. Health and illness in the

Latino patient are discussed to aid the interpreter in recognizing these

para-linguistic concepts and conveying them accurately during

interpretation. Core cultural issues that have potential for cross-cultural

misunderstanding will be highlighted. Not limited to Spanish only, this

presentation will be a forum for eliciting examples from attendees of other

languages.

3:15 - 4:15 Challenges of Pediatric Surgery for the Interpreter

Presenter: Yolanda Olavarria

This presentation will discuss the procedures and problems encountered when

interpreting for the pediatric patient and family members at the Admissions

stage, Pre-Op, Post-Op and for the in-patient following surgery. Samples of

consent forms, discharge instructions and other documents the interpreter

encounters will be analyzed.

Justice System " will feature a summary of the Petrona Tomas case, among

other high profile cases. It will highlight the increased awareness and

impact these cases have had on the Criminal Justice System and the

interpreting profession.

2:00 - 3:00 Help for the Beginning Court Interpreter through the Experiences

of Others

Presenter: Chittester

Interpreters encounter many unknown aspects when first embarking into the

world of doctors, attorneys, judges, investigations. Some knowledge of what

to expect will help provide the interpreter with the confidence needed to

successfully complete an assignment. Real-life ethical dilemmas will be

analyzed. Handouts will provide examples of bad translations currently

highly visible in Nashville in English and Spanish.

Presenter: Myra Gann

Polysemy, that quality of language which allows a word to have not only

multiple but also quite disparate meanings, poses one of the greatest

challenges an interpreter faces during the execution of his or her

profession.

Presenter: Grace (Tini) Gath Topics covered will be: What is a Certified

Public Translator/Sworn Translator? What are the requirements

for academic preparation, course content, mandatory protocols for written

documents and samples of typical

certified documents, such as birth and marriage certificates prepared prior

to and following the enactment of

the new Code of Ethics Law 20.305. A discussion of the highly-rewpected

Colegio de Traductores Públicos

de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires organization and its role in preparing aspiring

translators and interpreters and

supporting and training professionals in the field will also be noted.

Presenter: Judith Kenigson-Kristy

This presentation uses a light hearted game-show approach to identify

difficulties interpreters may experience when ethical problems arise.

America to Mexico. "

Presenter: L. Terzis, CT / ASLTA, Executive Director, Gate

Communications Interpreting between three languages and contending with

three cultures, simultaneously.

PRESENTERS

Yolanda Olavarria, a native of Puerto Rico, works at the Vanderbilt

Children's Hospital as a Staff Interpreter. Yolanda attended the Cross

Cultural Health Care Program's " Bridging the Gap " training in Santa ,

CA, and developed a written and oral assessment for medical interpreters in

Tennessee. She is a Registered State Court Interpreter.

Chittester is a retired U.S. Army Officer who has degrees in Financial

Management, International Studies (Latin America), and Business and

Economics. He has additional Spanish studies at the Monterrey Institute for

International Studies, the U.S. Foreign Service, and the Tennessee Foreign

Language Institute. He is a Tennessee State Registered Court Interpreter.

Rob Cruz worked for 12 years with a multi-national corporation serving as an

international corporate trainer and a trade show coordinator in both English

and Spanish. Rob has subsequently left that position to pursue

entrepreneurial endeavors which currently involve court interpreting as well

as other commercial interpreting and translating projects. He is a certified

Spanish/English interpreter for the state of Tennessee and to date holds the

highest score in the simultaneous portion of the Tennessee oral examination.

Isabel Framer: is a Tennessee and Oregon Certified Court interpreter living

and working in Ohio. She currently serves as a member of the Board of NAJIT,

on the Supreme Court of Ohio's Advisory Committee on Interpreter Services,

on the ATA Public Relations Committee, and on the NAJIT Position Papers and

Advocacy Committee. She has testified as an expert in court proceedings

regarding interpreter standards and has served as a consultant to defense

attorneys, prosecutors and law enforcement throughout US regarding

interpreting standards. She presents CLE courses to judges and attorneys and

training to law enforcement regarding legal issues, ethics, role and

professional responsibilities of the interpreter in legal settings. Ms.

Framer is the author of Through the Eyes of an Interpreter and Suggested

Guide for Interpreted Proceedings and author of Interpreters and Their

Impact on the Criminal Justice System: The Case, published

in the NAJIT journal, Proteus.

Dr. Myra S. Gann holds a Doctorate in Literaturas Hispanicas from El Colegio

de Mexico in Me?xico City. She retired from the State University of New

York at Postdam in 1999 after teaching in the Modern Languages Department

for twenty years. Certified as a Federal Court Interpreter in 1998, she now

resides in Nashville and works as an interpreter and translator.

Hein is an attorney trained in Costa Rica and in England. She

is a Federally Certified Spanish Court Interpreter residing and working as

an independent contractor in Louisville, Kentucky. As an adjunct faculty

member at the University of Louisville, teaches the negotiation

seminar at Brandeis School of Law. She is a member of the Bar Association in

Costa Rica and is a Licensed Mediator in the U.S.

Tini Grace Gath is a Traductora Pública (Certified Public Translator) and a

freelance translator and interpreter for international and national

government agencies, such as the IMF and Ministerio de Economía y Hacienda

(Treasury Department) and private companies in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as

well as an ESL instructor with 25 years of experience. Former owner of

interpreting and translation services in Buenos Aires, where she provided

conference interpreters the government and high profile international

companies, Tini Grace now teaches, interprets and translates in Memphis,

Tennessee.

Hinson is a Spanish translator with over 10 years of experience. She

runs Optimum Translation, LLC, which earned the 2001 Tennessee Hispanic

Chamber Business Woman Award and the 2002 US Hispanic Chamber Business

Award. In December 2003, received her certification in Translation

Studies from New York University.

Yulya Karnaukh was born in Kiev, Ukraine and moved to the U.S. in 1998.

She holds a Master's degree in Marketing and Advertising as well as the

Language Certificate from the Municipal course of foreign language studies.

She worked in international business as a Marketing Executive for 3 years

before becoming a professional translator and interpreter in 2002. Her

experience as a telephone interpreter includes employment with Language Line

Services of Monterey, CA and InterpreTalk of MA.

Judith Kenigson-Kristy, co-founder and advisory co-chair of TAPIT, is a

Tennessee State Certified and Federally Certified Court Interpreter of

Spanish. Judith is a member of the Board and Treasurer of the National

Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT) and regularly

presents workshops on court interpreter ethics and skill building.

Dubravka cic is an interpreter and translator for Croatian, Bosnian,

Serbian, and English. After obtaining a B.A. in Teaching English and German

as Foreign Languages in Croatia, she worked as a teacher and translator

until moving to the U.S. She interprets at all major hospitals in

Nashville, TN, as well as for insurance companies, law firms and in court.

Dubravka is an associate member of ATA and currently serves as President of

TAPIT.

Mc is a tax specialist and advocate who practices in Georgia and

Tennessee. She is the principal of " Advanced Business Consulting " in

Nashville, Tennessee

Johannie Resto is Manager of Interpreter Services at Vanderbilt Medical

Center; where she created that program tin 2001. nie is responsible for

providing interpreting services for Vanderbilt Medical Center Clinics,

Vanderbilt Hospital and the Children's Hospital. She is a Medical

Interpreter trainer and is a volunteer Spanish teacher to health care staff

at VUMN and volunteers at Siloam Clinic. Johannie has presented at meetings

of the National Prenatal Association of TN and the National Orthopedic

Association of TN.

Lori Sciadini is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Spanish and

Portuguese at Vanderbilt University, where, since 1988, she has taught

Spanish language and professional courses including Spanish for Business for

the Medical Profession. She currently teaches a Service learning-based

advanced Spanish course for pre-med, public health and pre-nursing students.

L. Terzis has been a Sign Language Interpreter for 17 years. She

currently serves as an instructor at Nashville State Community College in

their ITP, and as the Executive Director of Gate Communications, a

not-for-profit organization that serves the Deaf and Hard of Hearing across

the U.S. is a nationally certified interpreter and certified

American Sign Language Instructor. She has taught/interpreted Sign Language

in 2 countries and in 8 states. She has spent 5 years working with the

Mexican Deaf Community, and now seeks further study and personal exposure to

the varying Sign Languages and Deaf Cultures of Europe.

Joan Wagner became interested in Spanish when she taught pattern drafting in

the Peace Corps, forty years ago. She has taught Spanish at all levels,

kindergarten to university, and is a Tennessee State Certified Court

Interpreter in City.
