I have a small bottle of mullein flower oil that I use for ear infections.

It doesn't get rid of them it just relieves the pain. I set the bottle in a

little ramekin with warm water in it. Then put two or three drops in the ear

that hurts. It's a little nicer when it's warmed. I got mine at an herb

store. I'm not aware of any other uses for it although I'm sure there are

plenty.

Is mullein a grain? We have mullein plants growing around here and I harvest

the leaves and the flowers to make a cough and cold syrup.

You know, I don't really know what it is. I'll reread my article. I'm

looking because it is recommended for the lungs My husband catches

everything that goes around and it goes straight to his lungs.

Here's a great remedy when you get bronchitis or have problems with the

lungs. Put some ice or a cold towel on the chest. I usually use a bag of

peas or corn on a towel with the kids. Do this for five minutes. Then put a

heating pad on the chest for 15 minutes. When you finish with the heat pack

have the person cough as you pound their back. You don't need to pound hard

at all. Do this cold/hot/pound rotation several times. It breaks up the

stuff in the lungs, dislodging it and you move out of the bronchitis stage

back to a plain cold. It works great. I've done this with my kids for years

and had the opportunity to try it myself this year. It was amazing how all

of a sudden the stuff breaks loose and you are coughing it out.

Yes, I know Mullein as an herb. It is a 3-4 ft tall plant tht has large

green leaves and they are fuzzy. In the fall yellow flowers will appear in a

cluster at the very top of the plant. It grows in sandy soils that have not

been disturbed much. We find it a lot around here in ditches and the

outskirts of woodlands. The leaves are very effective for minor colds and

some minor coughing from infection. The flowers are for infections,

especially those of the lungs. (bronchitis etc.)

I personally would use the flowers sparingly and the leaves I would use as a

daily preventative if needed.
