why the rice cooker? because i can put oatmeal and water in it

tonight and have hot oatmeal in the morning (as opposed to instant

oatmeal or spending 30+minutes stirring oatmeal on the stove to then

be left with a really messy pan); because it is so simple that my

husband can make perfect brown rice; because i can set the time to

have brown rice (or any grain) ready when i get home from work,

because i can put rice on and then leave the room or even the house!

plus the fact that i have an electric range anyway, so it's not like

i'd be cooking my rice on an open flame. i really love it, and it's

definitely changed the way my husband eats for the better!

I love rice cookers, too, mostly because I can just wash the rice, put it in the cooker, push a button, and then go use the computer or read or go to class without worrying about burning it. I've burned a lot of rice in my time.

With the rice cookers, there really were

not any on the market that are stainless steel, all Teflon etc, finally a

company called Miracle Exclusives started importing one we sell.

We cater to different markets, not just a

macro one, so while there will be a certain segment that knows the issues with Teflon

and would want something like this, they probably don’t have a concern in

terms of cooking their rice in something electric like this.

that is such a good point - about the teflon. I didnt even think

of that aspect! Teflon is a big problem - check out the info on

mercola.com about how toxic it is!

If you heat a teflon pan in high and have a canary in the room it will

die from the fumes! let alons what it does to peeope!

on the electrical point of view -when we had electric cooking in out

old house I did use the crock pot for overnight rice and porridge and

loved the texture anc convenience yet later found the energy

interesting -the long cooking was very yangizing with the added yin

chaoticness of the electricity. Or maybe that was just the chaoticness

of me!

it is sublte but for some people it makes a difference. whatever works

for you! and if the appliance helps you choose higher quality food and

enjoy cooking and eating it then enjoy them! just be aware of the

energy and see how it affects you. You will know.

I do find with a good pressure cooker - I just wait for the pressure to

come and then put a flame deflector under it, set a timer and come back

when it beeps. No watching the stove. same with boiling actually as

well.

that is what I love about mb cooking -t here is very little watching

the stove and stirring. I just put it all on to cook and go do

something else for most of it.

I've had the rice cooker argument with myself for a long time. I was a mere

mouse click away from buying one last year and then backed out. It's still

something I think of buying, even though I know it's not the healthiest

thing. With three children, two businesses and a husband that works outside

the home, it sure would be lovely! Especially the oatmeal since that is our

breakfast 3 or 4 days per week.

Of course, I still use an electric range (though I do believe we are going

to change that this year) and I still use a toaster oven quite often, too.

And in that toast oven I commonly prepare cinnamon toast to have with tea

(okay, maybe I should relenquish the macro goddess title after these

confessions! lol!).

Ah, yes. I didn't think fully about the teflon issue. My temptation with the rice cooker is convenience.

A pressure cooker is on my wish list, too.

Hi ! (and Everyone!), I, too, have an electric range...and don't see me getting a gas range anytime soon ( I rent, sooo...). Do you use a crock-pot ( I love to use mine...it's one that has a ceramic insert )? They look like a rice cooker...sooo, are they considered okay to use? Please keep in mind that I'm totally new to this. And could/would you please tell a not so brilliant cook at what temp and length of time you cook your oatmeal, rice and any other foods that you'd use the rice cooker for ( maybe I can adjust temp and time to make in my crock-pot...at least for now...can't afford to get anything else to cook/bake with )?!...I'd greatly appreciate it!!!... Ladies,

We all have to do what we feel most comfortable with. All I can

tell you is that I feel a GREAT difference cooking with gas vs

electric. I feel better, healthier, etc.

Lino told me (as I am sure I've shared before) I can eat all the

healthy perfect food I want, if I use electric heating I'll never

get better completely

Peace,

For me, when I first became macro, I used

a electric stove.

I was a bit later taking the KI Way to Health

program and had Esko for a few classes. She explained that some symptoms

of using a electric stove were more of a swollen stomach. I got my coleman

stove right after that.

I do take it when I travel and stay at a

hotel. After once setting off the alarm in a hotel, not the right ventilation,

the first thing I do now is open the windows really well. I think when the

person from the hotel came in the alarm and saw my stove, I must have said I

was testing it for camping.

Always fun to change a tank in the midst

of pressure cooking something without losing pressure.

I think brown rice is better than no brown rice no matter how you

slice it, so if this is the best way for you to prepare it now, you

should do it.

I think people get so intimidated by all the " requirements " of

organic food, certain cookware, etc....

I have to add though, " The further you go in, the bigger it gets! "

You'll find your consciousness changes the more you eat whole foods

and the macrobiotic way. The food tastes better and has better

energy when you cook it with high quality ingredients in high quality

cookware and with a peaceful mind!

Christy, I don't have a crock pot. i'm sure the ceramic part is good...it's the electric cooking that mb has a problem with. i also rent and am uncomfortable with bring a camping stove into my place right now. plus, i actually feel really good and see mb as preventetive, i'm not actually suffering/healing from anything at the moment. i don't really have measurements and times for my rice cooker rice and oatmeal because my cooker has "fuzzy logic" (which i think i have sometime, too!) so i just put the stuff in and set it for brown rice cycle or porridge cycle and when its done it plays a little song and then keeps the stuff warm for as long as i need. i set the timer most of the time, so i'm not even sure how long it cooks!! sorry to be so completely unhelpful! there is a book out (new, i think) called fresh from the vegetarian slow cooker. i'd recommend you check it out from your

local library and see what it has to offer! also, some google searches would probably give you some recipes to try! good luck! sarahChristy Kinsinger wrote: Hi ! roflmao I'm impressed with your quick answer!

I'll bet it's fun to try and do that. Let me tell you what fun it

is to bake a cake or pie in the coleman oven! Little box, really

funny, I can't believe I used to cook like that.

Hi , Thank you for replying...I do appreciate it. And you were more helpful than you know!... Unfortunately, the Real Estate Company that owns the apartment complex that I live in would evict me if I try to use a camping stove in the apartment ( not to mention that I'm also uncomfortable with it too ). They are VERY strict...we can, however, use a gas grill...of which I don't have one of those either. I'm not comfortable with using gas/propane etc. I grew up using electric appliances and had no family or friends that could "introduce" me to mb ( and lately I've been feeling VERY, VERY "cheated" because of both!!!...). Sooo, this all is VERY intimidating in regards to all the "requirements" of organic foods, cookware used, recipes, etc. I'm also getting VERY discouraged with all of it...ONLY because I feel it's beyond my reach. I do soo very much want to eat right and would love to be able to be so "skilled" (sorry...probably could find a better way of putting all of this...) at "practicing" mb!!!...I have realized that I am making more conscious choices of the foods that I buy!!!...I guess it's a start. Also, I too am not suffering/healing from anything at the moment. And I think I'll try some of that "fuzzy logic" too...And thanks too for the recommendations of the book ( which I'll be checking out Monday! ) and the google searches! I do soo greatly appreciate everything!!!... , My hats off to you!!!!! Anything you do in the right direction is going to reward you and your family. To be able to cook healthy food as opposed to easy SAD options is already a wonderful conscious effort. 3, 2, 1 Three kids, two businesses and one husband who can't share all the household chores (which also adds in there somewhere!!!!) - you deserve a title for sure!!!!!! How about Real Goddess!!!! And I thought it was plenty just to have kids!!!! Macrobiotics is a Life Long Practice - always someplace there's room for improvement, growth, more awareness - and there's always people ahead of you (on that topic of perfection) and people behind (making the new discovery, or discoveries you've already made). It's good to have others showing you from their experience what works, what doesn't - and when you're ready, well, you'll be ready. And the best advice Ilanit mentioned, don't sweat it. Enjoy!!!! You can choose to see the good (or the bad). Klara, working on looking at the goodseigman wrote: ,I've had the rice cooker argument with myself for a long time. I once had a question from my spiritual teacher. I'll pass in on here:

For people who believe we choose to be born: If we choose to be born, maybe we can choose whether or not to die also?

And for a macrobiotic person not to get sick you will have to really stick to the balance. That is a bit too hard....

Ifso I appologize. But in my opinion sometimes we have to do things weare not comfortable with. Especially when it comes to maintain orregain a good health. Having worked as a macrobiotic technicalspecialist (similar to a nurse) I know that a sick person will neverget completely well by cooking on electric. And a healthy person willeventually get sick cooking on electric. So, if a person is reallyserious about health and wellbeing, he/she should get a gas stove (orburners) as soon as possible. Yet again I have to say I am sorry for not posting more often. My owncomputer is still not functioning. Wish you all the best. And, by the way, does anybody know if there will be a macrobioticcruise this year also?AnJA---------------------------------Reply-To: VeganMacrobiotics To: VeganMacrobiotics Subject: Re: rice cookersDate: Fri, 13 Jan 2006 20:47:39 -0000Ladies,We all have to do what we feel most comfortable with. All I can tell you is that I feel a GREAT difference cooking with gas vs electric. I feel better, healthier, etc. Lino told me (as I am sure I've shared before) I can eat all the healthy perfect food I want, if I use electric heating I'll never get better completelyPeace,Reggie>> I love rice cookers, too, mostly because I can just wash the rice, put it in the cooker, push a button, and then go use the computer or read or go to class without worrying about burning it.
