Guest guest
Did anybody notice the " dark skinned " Jesus poll on excite? It seems two thirds of us have no trouble with the concept that Jesus might have looked more black than white. I wonder if that is a function of this New Age, or if people would have voted the same way in 1955. I was surprised at the result. The subject of cloning people is heating up again. It will be a reality soon. There is still a technical hurdle to wide-scale cloning. I think I mentioned before that it might be interesting for some of us to preserve a bit of our DNA on ice with some organization so that we can be cloned at different times in the future. The trick would be getting old memories of our lives today into the new unit in the future. Copious notes would help, but there may be a way to extract the information directly from brain tissue. The brain apparently acts somewhat like a hologram, storing everything in various parts in various ways. The next time we could take perfect care of our teeth from birth. I'm over time replacing all those old silver fillings with white porcelain, but it would be nice to never have a cavity in the first place. I would also like to have more sophisticated sex as a ten year-year-old instead of going through all the fumbling and missing out on a couple of lay-up opportunities. I wonder if one could start a company to supply storage capabilities and software for remembering in the future. Some of the things that I think would be great turn out to have no appeal to another living being. If you live long enough, you could meet or create others who had similar interests. Lynn said she wouldn't want to wake up in the future. She is afraid of how the world might look at that time, and whom she might get as parents. She said, " Wouldn't it be nice to just put an end to things? " I'm ambivalent. Cov
Guest guest
Cov, I will regret this because I am going to write a non PC answer. Jesus was a Semite. Most inhabitants of the actual location in which he is supposed to have worked and lived are white. I know there is a move on to make all great people Black including Moses And the egyptians, not to speak of the Greeks. The Arabs are Semites. Those who live in what used to be called Arabia are considered members of the caucasian race. Those from what is Israel were mostly semites also. As far as the historical Jesus is concerned, let's not paint him other than he was, please. He did not have blonde hair or blue eyes either, I bet. We are speaking of a certain historical person at a certain historical time at an certain historical place. Now, the figure of Christ, in his role as redeemer, saviour and all other cosmic titles....well, he can be any color or no color whatever makes people feel closer to him. Each person is entitled to his own Imago-Dei. Let's try to keep facts as facts without involving race, color or political correctness. I know I am out of date, but this kind of PC thinking bothers me. Was Pontius Pilate black too.?or only the good guys? On the other hand we all come out of Africa we are told, before this latest discovery, we thought we had found Eve.But that was a few millennia earlier, before the skin reacted differently according to its environment. Cloning. Suppose the human race does manage to copy a human being in a laboratory...what does that do to our ideals about what a human being is, and is worth ? Wouldn't it be easier to believe in reincarnation? AT least that way, you appear as a new person having learned from past lives. As for memories, fix that, and make Alzheimer patients remember again. Should be easier. The idea of 2 " me " s is too much. I would need two of my husbands to be happy, and please clone my kids too. But would the world really want 2 of me? I seriously doubt it.( some of my students would probably run in terror of 2 me) If I am to return let me at least have learned from my experiences...and please skinnier in my old age. My moral, ethical answer to the problem of cloning comes from the myth of Icarius. The hubris of the human race is unbelievable, as is the so called humanitarian reasons given, which are window dressing for those who want to play G-d. As Clinton would say " that depends on what " end " means, " tell your wife, please. I dare say, I doubt we have an " end " except in this funny body. Seriously, I will get concerned once the " technology " is perfected.I won't however hold my breath. I also won't worry about over population. Let's figure that one out first. I don't think it is " over " population as much as it is distribution of what is available to sustain life. Those who worry about over population remind me of the refugees who came to this country in safety, and now want to close the door on any other refugees. I told you all, I warned you.
