Guest guest
I am confused - why was the Indian Government not able to buy them - Couldn't they outbid Mr Mallya -- or done some arm twisting. These are ' National Treasures " and its a shame that the Indian Goverment cannot procure them from whosover ! I don't think there place is in somebody's home....whether the individual is great or not. I am sure Gandhiji would appreciate, if the general public could be able to see them.....learn from them. As far as Prabha...your comment that the young people don't even know (much)about him .....that is a shame....and the government, the media and the people themselves are to blame. In the media, here they quote Gandhi innumerous times in all kinds of forums...even late night talk shows such as Jay Leno. One should see how Abe Lincoln 's birthday is celebrated. Ofcourse the schools start doing projects, presentations, arts and crafts, bulletins and what not, weeks ahead. These come home in their book bag and there is no way we parents get don't get re educated and reminded of his greatness. The goverment hosts formal events which is covered so well in the media. The media starts talking about him a week or two ahead and will host Abe Lincoln specials. The will interview African Americans and reminesce about civil rights movements. The book stores are flooded with new and old books about him, his legacy, about civil war and even books about his assasination and the conspiracies. And believe me these are mostly newly published books ...some by renowned historians...in all sizes...smaller one for people like me who are reading challenged. Malls will have special sales ( american consumerism to the hilt ) e.g., President day sales. Libraries and Museums will have special events and many more ways... the list can go on !! And this is not just for him.... Luther King, F Kennedy (media's darling ). That's how these leaders have been immortalized !! And I am sure even couple centuries down the lane it would be the same !! My memories of October 2nd as a teen / young adult would be of being on the wrong side of the debate trying to defend him while most young minds were focused on his inadequacies to the point that they would say that they believed in Netaji's method of war (I don't mean to undermine him either ) and that there was a conspiracy to make sure that he was not successful. Even here as mature adults I see the huge numbers if not majority focussed on the negative things ( call it Gandhi bashing ) and some going to the length of denying him the credit for the success of the freedom movement. Most here ( Indians ) are not so 'cool' (enlightened ) about his method of nonviolence !! For you & me, Prabha, we grew in the hallowed land of Bapuji. If most of the educated of our generation are not excited about Gandhiji and his ways... I think it is because we don't celebrate his life ( in every kona kona ) and teachings the way these guys do here....Just imagine if we (across the nation ) did the same thing from Nursery through college through grown adults...... I don't think you would have to make the sad comment of the young kids not even knowing who he was and what he stood for and what he achieved ! I wonder if the movie Gandhi is telecast across the media ( commercial and noncommercial) on every important historical day of our country and not just his birthday. I always feel I am in the minority even in our generation when it comes to defending Gandhi... And I am afraid that what Albert Einstein said that few generations down the lane will find it difficult to believe that such a great soul existed on this planet !! May be our only hope would if the west start celebrating his life and work as they are smitten by yoga these days !!
