Guest guest
Some things that I have found to be helpful in getting services is to make written requests, under the Open Records Act, for all " policies and procedures " related to the topic - such as determiniation of who qualifies and what services are to be provided to a student for ESY services. I send my leter to the Sp. Ed. director and cc the Supe. usually, there are no policies or procedures and if there are, they are so loosley written they cannot deny services. Another thing you might do is find out what services they offer for non-special ed services. Our ISD (AUstin) has these intensive summer reading and math programs for elem thru high schoolers fro kids at risk of not passing TAAS...the services are designed for these kids to MAKE PROGRESS...and are free (no transportation). We have been telling folks that if the reg ed kids get to have a program to make progress then spec ed kids should get the same - not just maintenance for kids at risk of regression....why should our kids get less? I hope this helps. This is actually an issue I will be bring up w/ advocacy inc and the the OSEP visit....everyone is going to be at the OSEP visits, RIGHT?
