Guest guest
Hey guys! sounds like you guys are sweltering. It is winter now in Melbourne - some cool days but some great days of sunshine and warm weather.... During the summers when I have been able to tolerate the heat I found it helpful to eat less fruit and was able to do this by eating lots of pressed salad and crispy, refreshing foods... cooling while still respecting the digestive funtioning of the middle burner.... lighter grains - cous cous, bourghul, toating long grain rice before boiling, with or without corn off the cob salad with cucumber and lettuce and celery, beetroot.... eating these more balanced and refreshing yin foods tends to help one not have such a yearning for extreme yin to open and up and relax initially but eventually clog the system.... it can take some fine tuning..... tabbouli salads are nice - can make them toasted millet that has been boiled or even quinoa. I also love salads made with leftover grains with rice vinegar and ume vinegar. Like rice, parsley, blanched broccoli, grated carrot and dulse with mirin, ginger juice, ume and rice vinegar.... noodle salads udon in broth with lots of shiitakes and tofu a little tofu can help you cool off and even though it is spicy a little ginger can help to relax and unwind! whatever you do dont forget the SHIITAKES! they are the best remedy for humidity. At the KI in Holland we were taught by Wieke that one shiitake a day in the dried form is all most people can handle in holland or they get chilled however one student from sticky sweltering (but beautiful - yet who can enjoy the flowers in that heat?!!) Singapore mentioned that by eating 7 dried shiitakes a day she coped fine with the heat. They are strong medicine. One dried shiitake is equal to a punnet of fresh ones in their medicinal punch! I love cornmeal and polenta dishes esp in summer.... check out my recipe for Enchanted Broccoli Forest made with a polenta base - it is at cybermacro.... http://www.cybermacro.com/Macrobiotic_Recipes/From_Cookbooks/Enchanted_Broccoli_Forest_with_Pumpkin_Creme_by_ilanit_Tof/ while u are there check out the summer macro quiz that and I cooked up... http://www.cybermacro.com/summer-quiz.htm My friend and I taught a cooking class in her farmhouse kitchen on one of the most sweltering days of the year. It was a roaring success and my cookbook that has recently been published features recipes from that class as well as others with tons of variations.....so if anyone need smore summer food ideas....it is all vegan and centred and exciting macro style alchemy in the kitchen you can order it from cybermaco.com or from my website http://www.littletree.com.au/seasonal_variation.htm end of commercial break!! purpleveg wrote: , How nice to hear from you. That is one of the reasons for starting this group, I am happy to hear from others when they are doing well, as inspiration. Not only that but when I'm down for not eating just right it's nice to know I'm not a mb failure, remembering I am only human. I'm sure there are others who don't participate often for that same reason thinking we are so 'good' and feel intimidated therefore don't post. no matter what we eat, it doesn't make us more or less macrobiotic. We are all aiming for balance....we make balance the best way we can with what we know, perceive and where we are at. We never know all the factors and influences to which we are subject... I really do hope to hear more from you. me too! Tonight's dinner: some whole foods pea soup, I love pea soup - maybe cause I am Dutch - though they put ham in it! Silly... I just love cooked split peas or even better whole boiler peas with parsnips and onions and a little miso at the end. Lately I just discovered organic frozen peas - new here - and they just go in at the end of a dish - like miso or even with long grain rice and corn! Not often - but a nice alternative - they are so sweet - snap frozen... brown rice sushi (carrots and avacado) mmmm and pico de gallo chips with tofutti guacamole sour cream. no idea what that is - but I can imagine. The only tofutti we had here was a type of vegan ice crea, The guacamole makes me think that wasn't it though! Am I gross or what? no - you aren't - I know you are kidding but this reminds me of my current quest to un create my judgements of food which instead of helping me make more balanced choices for me - tend to do the opposite - I tend to rebel against my own judgements and am drawn to what I judge the most...silly....? maybe....when I let go of the deep judgement I am free to really choose and then it tend to be from a freer place and choose what truly nourishes me....mostly it isn't always easy... It's been about 100 degrees for days and so bloody humid. my mother grew up in New Orleasn and when we visited in winter I still felt like I was in a sauna... Hope it cools off for you guys!
