I always avoided the national gatherings because I can't handle crowds. Same with dead shows (though I went to a couple in the early 1980s before I realized I just couldn't take the crowd.) I only went to the gatherings that attracted a couple hundred people or fewer and just moved from gathering to gathering all year long. It was much better than being homeless, which was my other alternative at that point. Well, another alternative would have been to get myself put back in the mental hospital, but I'd rather be homeless. I lived for a year and a half in a commune and it was a complete nightmare! Never again! The times when I was homeless and sleeping in the public library (hidden behind a book) by day and awake all night, eating out of dumpsters was less stressful for me than living in an urban hippie commune!
