Guest guest
I have some palm oil from spectrum. It's a white creamy substance and I don't notice a real strong taste with it...certainly not a rancid taste at all. I just stuck my finger in it and tasted it plain. It definitely has a feeling of fat in your mouth and a slight taste but it's not a bad taste by any means. REgarding the coconut butter from Omega nutrition, I just bought some and am starting to experiment with it. Having read that message on the coconut oil I thought it was something we would try adding to our diets. In the refrigerator it gets rock hard. Yet on my countertop, now that we are going into the summer some of it is still a solid but it is definitely melting. Is this ok? Can I use it when it's melting like this or will it go rancid on me. Also, my daughter (age 10) is getting some terrible acne. Large pimples that never break through. None of the acne cleansers have been doing any good. We've increased our coconut butter and milk consumption and I've been putting coconut butter on her skin each morning and night and suddenly her complexion is looking great. Don't know if this is just a coincidence or not.
Guest guest
Kareemah, I have recently purchased the palm oil as well from Spectrum from my distributor. It was very different. I am not familiar with how it is supposed to taste or if mine tastes the same as yours... Mine looks just like you have described. It would be interesting to hear others and what they think of the taste of these shortenings. I have never yet tasted the coconut oil shortening before. Actually all I have really ever used was butter myself and I of course have tasted store shortening from others cooking. I am not sure that I really like the palm oil shortening much. It definately has its own flavor. a Augustine "God doesn't call the qualified, he qualifies the called." ----- Original Message ----- From: umbasheer@... Native-Nutrition Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2001 1:56 PM Subject: Palm Oil Hello Everyone: Has anyone tasted palm oil before? I just purchased some of the Organic Vegetable Shortening from Spectrum Oils. I got it from a local health food store, but it tasted old and slightly rancid to me. They claimed that it had only been on their shelf for a little over a month. Spectrum claims that it has a two year shelf life. It tasted off to me. Does anyone know what natural palm oil is supposed to taste like? It looked nice and creamy, but it didn't taste right to me. Can anyone give me a clue as to what I should be looking for in this oil. I've never tasted it before so I don't know what to expect from it. I usually use Coconut oil. Thanks,Kareemah

Guest guest
The container says 100% pure palm oil and I believe it says cold press. It is not heated to high temperatures.
Guest guest
I've seen that organic shortening from Spectrum in the stores, but haven't read the package. Is it pure palm oil? Is it highly refined? --- BrenRuble@... wrote: > In the > refrigerator it gets rock hard. I've read that coconut oil doesn't need to be refrigerated because it's very stable, since it's so saturated, and won't go rancid for a very long time. I don't remember precisely where I read that, it was either at the WAPF website or a link given by someone on this list recently. I don't usually refrigerate mine, it just makes it too difficult to use, since it gets so hard and I can't seem to remember to take it out far enough in advance to soften up. If I was going to store some for more than a couple months without using it, I'd put it in the refrigerator, just as a precaution. > Also, my daughter (age 10) is getting some terrible > acne. I've also read that it has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties, both internally and externally, so it's entirely possible it has helped to balance whatever was causing your daughter's skin to break out. Guest guest
Hello Everyone: I called the people at Spectrum, and they said as most of you all have said, " there should be no taste to the oil. " So I returned the oil and received a refund. Now I want to find a different batch. Well there are a few other markets that sell it, maybe I can purchase it somewhere else. The lady who I spoke to was very nice about it and she thanked me for bringing it to the companies attention. She was glad to know that the store, from which I purchased it from, gave me a full refund. Plus she sent me out some coupons for the oil. So, I remember there was someone else here who agreed with me about the off taste, you might want to get a refund also. Or if you don't still have a receipt call the folks and tell them you got an off batch. They will probably either refund you or at least give you some coupons to purchase some more from a different store. I just asked the lady at the store that I bought it from could I smell another tub, because I really wanted to buy some. But they all had that rancid smell so I didn't bother. When you go to the store just open up the tub and smell it. If it smells off don't bother. It shouldn't have any smell or taste. Guest guest
Hi, We use the palm oil and butter, the color is what's strong. It's neon orange LOL! The taste reminds me a bit of raw orange squash. I've never tried it in a smoothie though. Elainie
Guest guest
------->OK, between chris' post and yours i'm convinced that it's time to try palm oil. when i run out of wheatgerm oil, i'll give the palm a try. does anyone have any idea how much vit E tocopherol/tocotrienes is in Tropical Traditions palm oil? they have a chart showing ppm, but not actual content in IUs, or other familiar measurements. are there any other sources of good palm oil other than tropical traditions? anyone know if it's mild enough to sneak into a smoothie without noticing the flavor? Suze Fisher Sorry if this has already been answered. I'm way behind on reading the digests. I get to read 1 every now and then, but 2 more show up in my email. While I can't vouch for the taste as I haven't tried it yet, I know Wilderness also has palm oil and butter, tho their web site says they are currently out of stock. The TT oil isn't bitter, but it does have a slightly strange taste that comes through if you put too much in a smoothie. Also, while coconut oil tends to solidify into chunks, palm oil (or butter) will stay liquid and give the whole thing a slightly oily texture. I like it to solidify. I guess that would make it a chunkie. -- Berg bberg@...
Guest guest
I also like it to solidify! I like to put it in my homemade yoghurt, then I have crunchy yoghurt! Why do you use palm oil, why don't you just use coconut oil? I guess I missed something about palm oil.
