Get to the Core of Motivation

by Jane

“Motivation comes from doing, not thinking.†The longer you sit and think about doing something, the harder it becomes to do it. If you think too much, excuses may paralyze you. Today is your day to stop thinking and start doing! When you start doing something, positive energy flows and you become more motivated. So don’t think about how you’re going to exercise. Put on your running shoes and run! Don’t think about how you’ll learn a new skill some day. Go out and book a course, right now! Stop procrastinating. Start doing! You’ll find a motivation that can change your life!

NO HOPELESS SITUATIONSThere is a wonderful urban legend circulating about a man who istrying to land a job as an assistant professor in a university. Hisapplication was rejected and he writes the following response:"Herbert A. MillingtonChair - Search Committee412 A son Hall, Whitson UniversityCollege Hill, MA 34109Dear Professor Millington,Thank you for your letter of March 16. After carefulconsideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to acceptyour refusal to offer me an assistant professor position in yourdepartment. This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving anunusually large number of rejection letters. With such a variedand promising field of candidates, it is impossible for me toaccept all refusals.Despite Whitson's outstanding qualifications and previousexperience in rejecting applicants, I find that your rejectiondoes not meet my needs at this time. Therefore, I will assume theposition of assistant professor in your department this August. Ilook forward to seeing you then.Best of luck in rejecting future applicants.Sincerely,L. Jensen"If it is true that you can tell how big someone is by what it takesto discourage that person, then this is a man who must be massive. Imight say the same thing about a boy who, in real life, was not sobig. But he was difficult to discourage and so he showed himself tobe a giant on the inside. Some 40 years ago, when he was only 11 years old, Rowe losthis left arm and much of the use of his right arm. It happened whenhe fell off a tractor at his father's fence company in Valdosta,Georgia, and was dragged beneath the machine. 's left arm wasdestroyed and his right, mangled.Young was released from the hospital after three-and-a-halfmonths. The first thing he set out to do was to help pay thebills -- $30,000 worth. That was a lot of money back then as it isnow. For a boy of 11 to accomplish such a task, the situation seemedhopeless. For five years scoured roadsides picking up cans and bottles. He collected thousands of cans and collected and sold newspapers. Henever gave up hope. First, he paid off the $455 ambulance bill. Thenhe put $2,500 down on the hospital bill.He was still a long way off though his parents raised another $9,000toward the debt.People began to hear about the injured boy and eventually some 2,000donations poured in, totaling $25,000. The bill was paid in full! set aside the additional money for future education. What then? Though the bill was paid up, kept his projectsgoing to collect money for the hospital so he could help others.Someone forgot to tell the boy he was too injured for that kind ofwork. Someone forgot to tell him that the situation was hopeless.Somehow young didn't realize that an 11-year-old boy couldnever pay off a hospital bill so large.Church reformer Luther once said, "Everything that is done inthe world is done by the hopeful." And entertainer Dinah Shoreobserved, "There are no hopeless situations - only people who arehopeless about them." Rowe should know.I will not always be young and strong. My life circumstances canchange in an instant. My health may leave me and I may lose peoplewho are important in my life. But there are no hopeless situations. So I won't easily turn loose of my hopeful outlook, even when thingsseem bleak. Without hope, I'm lost. But with it, I suspect that anysituation can be creatively redeemed.Steve Goodier

Time at hand

You can’t make more hours in each day. Yet you can put more purpose and focus and meaning in each hour.

Blaming a lack of time is like blaming the sun for rising. There’s nothing you can do about it, so it’s not a factor to concern yourself with.

What you can do, is make the commitment to yourself to make each moment count for something meaningful and valuable. What you can do, is allow your authentic purpose to guide your focus, your actions and your use of the time that’s at hand.

Instead of worrying or being distracted about things that really don’t even matter, give your energy to what you truly care about. Instead of letting the time slip away, allow the best of your dreams to more fully unfold with each passing moment.

Remember constantly who you really are and why you have chosen to go in the direction you’re going. Every thought, word and action that comes from your true purpose will draw great value from the moment you’re in.

Whatever your age or situation, there’s plenty of time to live richly. And that time is here right now.
