Gluten free oats

Hi Alia

In Australia the oats are contaminated in transport mainly I think.

I was told that I 'might' be able to tolerate oats, but it is recommended

that you maintain a gluten free diet and then test it out.

I get really sick now if I have gluten, so I haven't had the courage

to try it. You can get gluten free oats, but I'm yet to see them

in Perth, where I live. They're available in the US though, at a price.

I would be very careful at restaurants, unless they advertise that

they do gluten free, they really don't know what they are talking about.

I learnt my lesson the hard way. I ordered plain rice noodles and

asked if the chilli sauce was gluten free and was told it was, so had

some over the rice noodles for flavour.

The next day I had a full-on reaction, so I never listened to wait staff

again - I always asked to see the ingredients list, or talk to the chef.

The Coeliac Society in Australia sells info/training packs to

catering companies and restaurants that becomes a bit like a

gluten-free accreditation. Not sure about the US.
