Guest guest
Hi, I just started my 3-1/2 year old son on Valtrex yesterday (his HHV6 is very high). He has been on Nystatin for about a month and a half and I was planning on continuing it, but then saw a post that " most if not almost all " kids don't do well on this combination. Can anyone elaborate so I know what to tell my DAN? If I were to stop the Nystatin, should I just do it cold turkey or should I taper off. Do I definitely need to start another anti-fungal right away? In my opinion, my son's yeast " problems " are questionable. He had elevated arabinose on the OAT, but not majorly high (compared to other's results I have seen), and we haven't really seen any gains from the Nystatin. Any advice would be appreciated. Guest guest
Laurel, There are a lot of symptoms of yeast: night wakings (often w/maniacal laughter), itchy genitals, distended belly, loose stools and/or constipation, etc. Does your son have any symptoms? That may be a better guide for you if his tests are borderline. My son was on Diflucan before starting Valtrex. When his Diflucan script ran out, he really had a hard time. We thought it was yeast but now it looks much more like a bacterial infection. He is being tested for a UTI. In essence, I think every child is different and you have to use your lab results, others experiences, your DAN's advice and your mommy's intuition to make a decision that is best for your son. Best of luck! Guest guest
If that were my child I would have Diflucan purchased and have that ready for when you start Valtrex... or possibly drop the Nystatin entirely and switch to Diflucan or Nizoral when you start Valtrex. - Stan > > Hi, I just started my 3-1/2 year old son on Valtrex yesterday (his HHV6 > is very high). Guest guest
Dr. Sid Baker does the anti-fungal parade even when yeast is not shown on tests. Worth consideration. > > Hi, I just started my 3-1/2 year old son on Valtrex yesterday (his HHV6 > is very high).
