Benefit From the Mistakes of Others

by Jane

“You cannot live long enough to make all the mistakes. Learn from the mistakes of others.†In every mistake, there is learning, but not every mistake has to be your own. Just as society uses history to learn from the mistakes of earlier generations, so can you. Save yourself some time and frustration and look to those around you and learn from their experiences. For instance, instead of being defensive when an older person passes on advice listen and appreciate the learning they’ve gained over time. Tune into their mistakes more closely than their successes. Reflect on why things went wrong and tuck the learning away in your mind for your own future challenges. By avoiding the mistakes made by others, you can create true success for yourself in a lot less time.

Understanding

Keep in mind that every person with whom you come in contact today has a perspective that is different than yours. Though you have much in common with others, there are many differences as well. Even those who agree with you have a different perspective than your own. No one else knows exactly what you know. No other person shares your unique set of experiences, just as you do not share the exact same experiences as anyone else. Your success in working with other people will depend largely on the degree to which you are able to understand and consider their unique perspectives, and on your ability to make your own perspective understood. Your knowledge, your experiences, your opinions, your assumptions are not necessarily shared by others. Make the effort to sincerely understand, and to be understood. It will add value and effectiveness to every undertaking.

Better to do it right It’s tempting to compromise and take a shortcut. It’s better to do it right. What’s the point of giving, when you give less than you’re capable of giving? If you’ve decided something is worth doing, then it’s worth doing in the best way you know how. If you seek to cheat life, you end up cheating yourself. Choose instead to deliver more than you promise, and even if no one else notices, it is still worth all the effort. Because one very important person will notice. That person is you. Your own authentic perception of yourself is far more important to you than what anyone else thinks. Living with absolute integrity is what will raise that perception to its highest level. Life is too precious and too full of positive possibilities to cheat yourself out of even a moment of it. You owe it to yourself to do it right. Ralph Marston
