An elevated CK is evidence of muscle damage. It is used most commonly to diagnose damage to the myocardium (heart attack). Even something as simple as an IM injection can cause a slight increase in your CK. Rhabdomyolysis is when the body has no nutrients left to metabolize for energy, so it starts breaking down muscle mass. This usually leads to renal failure due to the abnormal amount of protein the kidneys need to metabolize. Rhabdo is seen in marathon runners and it's also seen in guys with a low body fat percentage who go on a crystal meth binge and don't take in any nutrition.

Elevated CK can be an indicator of rhabdomyolysis.

Bob

Can you tell me what rhabdomyolysis is? Thank you.

Wow Rick, thanks for this new piece of information I have never seen anywhere. Any reports or just anecdotal? The use of crystal meth is spreading so fast in the community with huge consequences on health, wasting, mood disorders, etc It also seems to me that lipoatrophy seems to occur faster since calories drop and activity levels increase.

No I have not. You can just say " In my experience working is a hospital, I have seen Rhabdo in guys with a low body fat percentage who go on a crystal meth binge and don't take in any nutrition"

That would be a nice and considerate answer. No need to get reactive and attact for wanting to have a reference. If someone from the list asks anyone where they have got a certain piece of info., it is very OK to say that it is coming from your experience and what you have seen. Anecdotal information is very important as we all have seen in the past few years.

It may also be induced by statin drugs. Some are worse than others. The

condition may result in the need for dialysis due to kidney failure. The

risk may be exacerbated by combining statins with fibrates. See a case

report noted in AIDS, 2001 Apr 13;15(6):820-1.

Cocaine use--and possibly heroin--may also increase the risk of rhabdo.

There are a variety of other kidney ailments which may afflict people. A

review article is , DI et al, Sex Transm Infect, 1998

Jun;74(3):179-184.

Aside from the high cost of statin drugs, this and other toxicities lead to

the notion of other means of cholesterol management, such as the use of

niacin, carnitine, hawthorn berry, guggul lipids and so forth, singly or in

combination. Clinical evaluation of these alternatives is desperately needed.
