Guest guest
Yeah, Tasha's said basically the same thing. Well...it actually said that she had a fragmented sleep disorder with severe alpha wave intrusion; she spent way to much time in the level 1 transitioning state and not nearly enough time in REM sleep. When I asked for that to be put in a layman's terms, I was told that your alpha waves are the waves that are active during the day and so Tasha's brain was basically not shutting down at night the way it was supposed to. He also commented that the pattern is common among individuals with fibromyalgia. Anyway, so maybe, this pattern is common to Chiarians??? Hope y'all are doing as well as you can and are pain free. Guest guest
My sleep study said the same thing too….. I can remember the day when my symptoms started with Chiari – and I also remember my sleep patterns changing soon after that. I thought it was because I was stressed and sore from the accident, therefore I wasn’t sleeping right. I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t sleeping. Thought that when I turned I woke myself due to the pain or something, but in reality – I was never reaching the REM sleep. Looking back on this, knowing what we all know, it all makes sense now. One Dr said I have Fibro – he didn’t understand the Chiari thing and said that if I could correct my sleep patterns I would improve and not have this pain. I tried to explain to him that Sleep apnea is a symptom of Chiari – however he didn’t seem interested, considering I was the patient and HE was the dr. (Needless to say – I wont be returning.) I find it interesting that my sleep changed so drastically. I used to be able to totally relax myself and put myself to sleep even in the most stressful times of my life. However now – I can be totally relaxed – but my brain is still just going. It is strange – I can be DOG tired – but try to lay down and go to sleep – isn’t happening….. I now use a sleep aid that is addictive, but its okay, because I hope it will not be forever. I am hopeful that after my decompression that I will be able to go off the med. I am one that totally HATES to take medication. But for the first time in 2 yrs – I am sleeping again!!!! (I think this is the first ever med that I have taken that actually does something for me – after trying so many things, I am so THANKFUL for Ambian.) Anyone out there had their decompression fix their sleeping issues and be able to go back to normal sleeping again? Peaceful ZZZs to you all out there!!! in OH _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Hansen Sent: Tuesday, December 18, 2007 8:14 PM To: Subject: Re: Sleep Study Results Yeah, Tasha's said basically the same thing. Guest guest
I decided to post to the group on this as it effects a lot of us. People with chronic pain (lots of chiarians) use seratonin differently and at higher levels than " normal " people. Because of this the chemical that tells us to go to sleep and stay asleep is lower than normal (melatonin the chemical is derived from seratonin and it gets used up before it can become melatonin) That is why a lot of people respond to seratonin related antidepressants. You can also supplament seratonin in your diet with either a supplament like 5HTP or foods that contain tryptophan which is the precursor for seratonin in your body. You need to talk to your doc about 5HTP as it can interact with a lot of different antidepressants. As far as I know melatonin does not interact with meds. Melatonin is also safe for children with chiari and sleep difficulties. My children have never had " normal " sleep from birth. The kids PCP suggested it for my oldest when she was 4 and only sleeping 4 hrs a night. Charnel Do you have Chiari with Tethered Cord and/or EDS?
