Guest guest
You go girl...the animal therapy does help alot!! That is what is so strange about the Methadone (can't say " meth " or you think of some other drug!)...it works just like heroin...but doesn't have the " high " effect of the heroin...it just satiates that part of the brain for those withdrawing from the heroin. How does that work? How is that still a narcotic if it doesn't get you " high " ? I'm actually asking...and confused. I guess it's not the same as heroin but is still a " drug " without the complications or the intense " highness " ...I think I made that word up. I feel so NORMAL (lol) on the Methadone that I never felt when I was on the Oxycontin, MSContin, Fentnyl Patch, etc.... It is, like with everything else, an individualized drug...some hate it, some love it. I wish you could get it and that goes for anyone in pain. I lucked out with my pain doc...otherwise I would be in the same boat and I'm sure I will be some day when he retires...it is very SCARY!!! > > But Methadone is a narcotic while naltrexone is a narcotic antagonist. I agree methadone is better for pain but I can't get a doctor to prescribe it. I wouldn't take naltrexone if my life depended on it. It can throw someone like me who has been taking narcotic pain meds for a length of time into acute opioid withdrawl. I can't imagine how it works for pain. I guess I'll never know. My treatment for pain: Lortab and my Chinese Sharpei and Black Labs. Joy
Guest guest
I applaud you and anyone who has entered into a program for drug and/or alcohol rehab. That can only have been the HARDEST thing you have ever had to do!! If you can successfully get and keep away from the drugs that you were hooked to...you have accomplished something that a majority of humans could never do...look and confront their evils straight in the eye and fight them...successfully! Never let anyone take this away from you. At the same time, I will say that I do believe that any narcotic should be made available to any patient who is truly in pain. Should that patient give up and not try to better their condition with other non drug venues...no...we should always try to do things to better our lifestyles. Methadone allowed me to stop taking other pain killers, in addition to the oxy that I was taking, and quit muscle relaxers, anti depressants and anti psychotics. Is it forever, maybe not. But Methadone greatly improved my quality of life in more than one way. So I choose to take it although my mother had to stop because of the reaction she had to it...she ended up in ICU. But...there were many other factors that happened in her case and that is usually how it is with others. It usually isn't just the one medication that creates a problem for people...it is usually the combo with other meds or a change in their physiology or both. I did the other pain meds and went through many bad side effects which can happen with any drug!!! It can happen with pain meds, psych meds, cancer meds, HCV meds...so many factors to consider. It's so easy to blame one drug...just as easy as it is to blame one medical condition...when it is actually a combo of things and so individualized. These forums are both good and bad...due to each patient's situation being so individualized...the best advice should come from your doctor who treats you and knows you. Of course, good luck finding a good doc...that is where these forums can help. Again, I think what you are doing as far as recovery is a very brave thing!!! I just hate to say that nobody should take pain meds...not everyone is in your situation...not everyone feels your pain and you don't necessarily feel theirs. That is what makes us all so unique. > > Hi all -- > I'm glad to see that someone has written a WARNING about this precarious drug. Although it has/ is still used by these 'pain clinics' or centers for a variety of reasons in dealing with chronic pain it has always bothered me a great deal. The reason is that this is a highly addictive drug; that it was first used foraddicts to come off Heroin, and later it was discovered that the withdrawal from Heroin was not even as severe as that from Methadone. (At least so far as I know this was true for a long time; for someone treated as an addict weaned off Heroin and then on to Methadone, it would take one to two YEARS to come off Methadone with horrific side effects.) Guest guest
Thanks for all the messages Jane, Barbara and others... Here's my next question... Having just come back from the EMERGENY ROOM after 24 hours, what exactly happens during methadone withdrawal? How long does it take and is there more to come? See, I'm not an addictive personality, never took anything stronger than Tylenol for sinus headaches until I got this " disease " . My " shrink " never gave me details on these drugs, as if that would open me up to experiementing, so I just took them like he gave them, and despite being dumped thought I was doing pretty good getting off myself(you know, 3 one week, 2 the next, 1, 1/2 etc.) But after feeling like I had an alien in my gut yesterday and a bad feeling there's still a little bit in there, what else should I be expecting? Y'see, here in FL USA everyone is in hysterics because of the prescription drug epidemic we have going on, so everyone says, " oh you must find a doctor " but no one will touch me with a 15 foot pole. Wouldn't mind a little more advanced warning. For all the info on the web it's very hard to beat out the details. Thanks for all your support. ljg (P.S. - I STILL think pain meds should be available, BUT obviously not everyone should be able to pass them out)
