Guest guest
Happy Turkey Day!!! I was talking with some friends the other night and Chiari came up... as it usually does in my conversations lately. So, here is the question... How many of you, or know someone with Chiari that was a Primie? Have there been any reports corelating Chiari and Pre-mature birth? Just curious!! Guest guest
There was a similar question asked on ASAP about birth trauma. There were a large number of people with cm and sm that had very traumatic births. eg. cord around the neck, forceps etc etc. I myself was born anterior (meaning my face was up instead of down- this makes it extremely hard to come out) I also had forceps and had to really be yanked out. When I had my CT's done when I was first diagnosed it was noted that I have 2 free floating fragment of bone under my left temple (one is quite large) The radiologist stated at this was probably due an old skull fracture from a traumatic birth or delivery). I have often wondered it this has contributed. It certainly looks like those big bone pieces would have some effect on flow in there. Interesting question thanks for asking it. Guest guest
That's in interesting question. My husband and I have talked about it alot. I have only one child. I had thought about having 2. But, at 33 weeks of pregnancy, I went into preterm labor. They gave me Terbutaline and Magnesium Sulfate in the hospital for 4 days. At one point, my OB told me he wasn't sure they could stop it and I may just have her early. So, they were giving me Surfactant too. I was terrified. They got things to calm down on the monitor and sent me home. Well, I continued to have horrifying labor-like pain on bedrest for the next 5 weeks. That was back in 1995 when they didn't give pregnant women pain meds. I had many " false alarms " and if my water didn't break, I wouldn't have realized it was labor. I had her at 38 weeks. So, we were in the " safe " zone. My OB didn't really know what the cause was. He thought maybe I had an irritable uterus. This was long before my ACM, CCI, and Tethered Cord Symptoms. Back then, I just had occasional migraines and some low back pain. But, we were advised by my OB that we should NOT try for another pregnancy. He told us that not only will it happen again, but it will happen sooner, and they may not be able to stop it. The risk of giving an infant such a complicated and dangerous beginning in life, was completely heartbreaking and to me, not worth the risk. We ended up deciding not to have any more children. It has been hard during the times when my daughter was lonely and wanted a brother or sister to play with. Especially after my husband had a vasectomy, because there was no way to just change our minds and try anyway. How do you explain that to a child? Now, that I am so sick and we know the hereditary factor down the mother's side of the family, we are seeing symptoms in my daughter. She's 12 now. She's scared. I'm scared. I feel guilty for having her because I gave this monster to her, but I know I didn't know about it then. It's just really hard. To all you moms out there, I learned from a beloved pastor that children are a gift to us, the parents, from God. That he is there to love and support us in our journeys. And someday, they will return home to him. God Bless, Cassidy (aka ) --------------------------------- Get easy, one-click access to your favorites. Make Yahoo! your homepage. Guest guest
I have never read any research that states chiari is hereditary and runs on the Mothers's side. Where is this information? Guest guest
Funny you mention all of this...as I think in this day and age - if they didn't induce me - my kids would have stayed inside for that long!!! I just wanted to add to all of this....I was not a preemie, nor were my brothers. (I'm the only one who shows any of Chiari, TC, EDS) But I am rather short - not even 5ft. Now, as far as my kids...at 41 weeks, I had to be induced with my first child. My second, she was induced at 40 weeks. My third, I was induced at 38 weeks. (new doc and didn't want to risk me going into labor) And I was decompressed BEFORE I had my children - and as Chiari affects everyone differently - my pregancnies were the time I felt the BEST ever in my life! Now, by the third pregnancy, I was miserable - but I was heavier and chasing two kids around the house! I also hit my head in my 8th month and ALL of my symptoms and then some came back! I just wanted to throw my 2 cents into the mix - as everyone has such a wide variety of experiences....I don't think you can say if you are pregnant and have chiari 'X' will happen. The best you can do is talk with YOUR OB/Primary care and see how they want to proceed with your treatment. And as Cassidy () says, each child is TRULY a gift! (even when they are talking back, not cleaning their room, or not wanting to become potty trained!!!) in Leesburg, VA Decompressed/Fusion in 01 Children in 03,05,07 DX with OTC, EDS and failed decompression from TCI in 07 Happy Turkey Day!!! > > I was talking with some friends the other night and Chiari came up... as it usually does in my conversations lately.
