That's very interesting that you say that, I've often wondered the same thing. I was also wondering if anyone only used their meds when they know the change of season is coming to head off the asthma attacks and not use the stuff during the rest of the year? What I'm saying is for example: I take my allergy pill all year round, but not use the symbicort only during the time of year I KNOW will trigger my asthma symptoms. Does this make any sense? The reason I ask if the insurance just went up again and my copays are alot higher now and I honestly can't afford the meds even with the coupons. Sure the dr's will give me samples but that means a visit to their office and I can't afford to do that, it's a vicious cycle. I told dh, I feel as if the insurance company is telling me it's cheaper for them to have me die by not taking the meds. It just pure crazy I tell ya

HI all, I'm new here and mostly a lurker. I've been reading everyonesposts about how their asthma is and some are worse than others. I wasjust curious..has anyone tried to manage their asthma naturally. I'vebeen reading this book called "Healing the New Childhood Epidemics:Autism, ADHD, asthma, and allergies" by Bock, MD and CameronStauth. I'm reading it mostly for my daughter who has ADHD. Anyway Ithought I'd read about the asthma and allergies since I've had minesince I was 14 1/2yrs and now I'm 39yrs. It's very interesting abouthow the dr's in the book helped children with severe asthma andallergies. So I started thinking why not me. Some of us maybe needdetoxed from the baby vaccines we got and what ever else might begoing on in our bodies like, lack of vitamins and minerals and thegood bacteria that our gut needs and how our guts might have the badbacteria that could be causing some of our ailments. There is a partin the book about getting tested for allergies done by blood work, thedoctors mostly check the IgE Allergies which is common but there isalso IgG sensitivities, these are not classic allergies, they involvethe immune system's IgG antibodies instead of the IgE antibodies, sometimes these symptoms can take a day or two to show up, mostallergists ignore this because they are not classic allergies andthere's a third that might not be checked by allergists which isIntolerances which are chemical reactions, usually to foods that donot involve the immune system. I personally am sick and tired ofhaving allergies and asthma, I'm sick and tired of taking pills andinhalers everyday, and making the FDA and pharmaceutical companiesmore rich and I am going to cleanse my system among otherthings...naturally. It might take me awhile but I'm determined. Justmy input. Genevive

Awhile back I got my meds from the insurance company. I called them and asked if they would send my stuff in bulk, which they did and it was for about 3 months of meds. And it was alot cheaper than getting my stuff once a month from the pharmacy. Some insurances do this and some don't. Call and ask. But also check into the natural ways, I am. Soon. I take my allergy pills 2x a day year round. But my inhaler, I only take it when I feel wheezy. Which I've been good lately. GeneviveSubject: RE: Curious/?To: asthma Date: Monday, July 21, 2008, 7:56 AM

So you don't use Symbicort or advair daily?

I just want to do away with the meds the more expensive it gets the more it's going to push me to not take it like I should, I did this last go round got 3 months worth of meds at once which was cheaper than going once a month plus the samples from the office. I'll talk more with the insurance lady who calls me once a month, I'm wondering if I used a pharmacy in Canada would my stuff be any cheaper? How do the mail order pharmacies work? Anyone use them?

Terry, I adjust my advair use depending on time of year. Mid-summer

and mid-winter are both really bad times for me. At those times I

increase to Advair 250/50. The rest of the year I use Advair 100/50.

When I'm approaching those times of the year and I start to feel the

difference, and the peak flows start to drop, but I know I don't have a

cold or congestion, I up the Advair ( & call the Dr to let him know

I've done this).

I've been taking some type of inhaled steroid for the last 25 years.

Even though inhaled steroids have less side effects than oral, and the

side effects are still a better choice than not breathing, my Dr feels

is important to use the lowest dose meds as possible. Something with

which I agree completely.

Terry,

I order all my usual meds by mail (Medco). They give me the generic

for my allergy meds (Allegra and Flonase) but I also get my Asmanex

twisthalers and Proventil inhalers from them, and Xopenex vials for my

nebulizer. Everything costs me $12 for each med for a 3 month supply.
