Michele,

As far as I know, there's nothing in the regulation stating that the kidney must last for a defined period of time in order for the pt to be eligible for Medicare due to having a pre-emptive kidney tx, so it would seem to me that he/she gets is based on the tx.

I can't find a definate answer to this question in my Medicare coverage book, but I know someone in this group will have it...Patient gets a pre-emptive kidney transplant- 10 days later the transplanted organ is removed. Patient's native kidneys still making some urin, so patient is not on chronic dialysis.Is he entitled to ESRD Medicare and if so, for how long? I believe you have to get out of the hospital with the kidney to qualify.
