Hi Brigette....

, please correct me if I am wrong, but I have read on a website and my Dermatologist had told me that 90% of the cases of EN are caused by birth control pills. I wasn't on birth control, but was on hormone replacement because of a hysterectomy in "97. Anyway, he immediately took me off the hormone replacement because he felt that that was the culprit. Of course with my luck, that wasn't it either.....so still searching for the cause. I mentioned this because you may want to check with your doctors about the birth control being a possible cause.

Claim to be hpocondriack(I know spelling is wrong, I'm known at office for "lack" of spelling ability) and that I'm just nuts. Is it possible that after all these yrs my problems could be related to my lumps? Should I focus on the cause rather than the cure. Any suggestions who to see. Dermatologist dx, but was unable to help with getting rid of the lumps. they actually go away or subside on their own. Due to

my health I am curious if there is something else I should be doing. I did have recent breating test, dx w/ inflamed small airways. Suggested rx was flovent and albuteral. Helps breathing, still have lumps. I must add I'm on birth control. Have been for 18 yrs. Minus 3 yrs when Dr recommended to stop. Still developed lumps and resumed after 3 yrs. Now on estrace due to irregular monthly's. New flare up. Seems to be worse than usual. I've been reading what others say about their own lumps and health. I am sympathetic as I don't believe mine are as bad as some others. I am afraid mine may worsen. Sometimes I don't think I can make it through a work day due to other health problems. If they are related, I'ld like to find out how. "I want my life back, It's been to long now." How do you all

manage?"LUMPY"Brigette/PA

Dear Jo and Brigette,

With all due respect to your dermatologist, Jo, I do not beleive he is

correct in attributing 90% of EN to birth control pills. Here is a

link that gives many reasons for EN and I do beleive they are in the

order of most likely causes:

http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Erythema_nodosum?\

OpenDocument

EN has been around a long time, and certainly longer than BCPs.

Today many women in the age group that is often affected by EN do take

BCPs, and it might seem as though that was the predominant cause.

Ob/gyn's often see EN for that reason.

I may have been on BCPs when my EN first started,(I was misdiagnosed

as having first bug bites and then phelbitis) but I went off the pill

in a few years and the EN kept coming. I am now on natural

progersterone for menopause, and the EN is no worse than when I was

using no birth control at all. My ob/gyn said he would not put me on

BCP because of my history of EN, but I am pretty sure they weren't the

cause of it for me either.

Love,

Hi,

Mine is caused by birth control, but I have to be on it, so I have to live with

EN ... and my EN gets much worse when I exercise or get too hot (and I live in

TX), so I cannot win whatever I do. I have had over 20 lumps on each leg (below

my knees) at one time.

Hugs to all.

Pam

Hi all,

I went on birth contol pills in Oct. of 2002. By Feb. of 2003, my

first EN lumps formed. None of my Doctors seemed to know what they

were..I was on several series of antiboitics. They thought it was

gone...but, it kept coming back... my leg had become so infected that

they were worried it had gone into the bone. They sent me to a

specialist that had me at home on intravenous antib for 2 weeks and

he figured out what it was. I went off the birth control pills so I

thought I was done with the EN. Wrong!..It came back. After joining

this site, I find that it returns in times of stress....and things

are very stressful for me right now at work...sigh. I found the only

thing that worked for me was bed rest, cool cloths, and Aleve.
