Judy,

Here in the northeast kidney transplant can be estimated between

$55-65,000. Meds can be $25,000-$30,000. for the first year. Payment and

a signed self payment contract are required before listing.

Can someone out there share with me what they give as estimated costs

of

Kidney Transplant for someone who does not have coverage at the time

of

transplant. Surgery hospitalization, Approximate cost per month for

their medications, and for post-op care. I would like to see how the

figures I am quoting compare to others. Also, what is your policy for

a

deposit or the funds they need to pay up front to have the transplant.

Thanks, Judy

Hi Judy, a few years ago UNOS was quoting $140K from eval through first 12 months post op including meds for a kidney transplant - they based the figure on "average billed charges" I believe. We have no policies in place to accept a private pay patient at this point.

In my opinion, for what it's worth, while it's great to discuss general policies, procedures, etc. (what services are included, for example, or when a deposit is due), I would STRONGLY suggest we refrain from quoting dollar amounts simply because there are too many variables from ctr to ctr & region to region to make a true comparision.

As an example, when I was at another ctr here in Boston that shall remain nameless, the chief of the tx service did a tap dance on head on a regular basis over the amount we would 'quote' (which, btw, included hospital & MD fees) for a self-pay kidney tx pt, which was at least double what our 'partner' was quoting . I was accused of various crimes against humanity by said chief (usually @ the Friday morning mtg of course) including his favorite of 'driving business away', but, as we came to find out eventually, the reason the quote from the 'partner' facility was so low was because it was for the inpt stay of the recipient only & didn't include ANY organ acquisition!!! Leave that off & anyone would do a kidney tx for $7K cost, right??

Just my 2 cents, though.

You are right about quoting $ amounts, . I have no idea what would

be included if we had a self pay kidney contract,as I do not do

contracting. I only estimate a range, as patients often ask. But I

always add that the cost would depend on individual experience.

We give a general amount of $100,000 for a

kidney and $300,000 for a liver for the transplant event. And only as a “ballpark”

amount. As says below, to get any more specific is risky. Whatever

figure you first give people, written or oral, is the amount they remember. But

they will not remember any qualifiers such as LOS, complications, etc. that you

tell them when you quote an amount. ( Experience is a harsh teacher. )

You may also want to consult page 26 of the new

UNOS publication of

" What every patient needs to know. " In

it, you'll find estimates for

all

phases and aspects of any organ Transplant.

Can someone out there share with me what they give

as estimated costs

of

Kidney Transplant for someone who does not have

coverage at the time

of

transplant. Surgery hospitalization,

Approximate cost per month for

their medications, and for post-op

care. I would like to see how the

figures I am quoting compare to others.

Also, what is your policy for

a

deposit or the funds they need to pay up front to

have the transplant.

Thanks, Judy

UNOS describes this as "estimated U.S. average billed charges per transplantation" - developed by a business analysis company called Milliman USA Inc
