Guest guest
Dear Shyam, Believe me, the incidence of Swine flu is pretty much the same in most big cities - people are scared of Pune just because a number of cases have been detected there - but that is because NIV is in Pune - and results were available faster for locally referred samples. In the other cities, patients have had to wait for many days to get through the paperwork and formalities with the public health system - first to send samples, and then to get a report from NIV, Pune, or NICD, Delhi - and that itself became a deterrent for sending samples for testing - because most people got better anyway. What I am getting at is there is as much of a risk of getting swine flu in Pune as in Bombay - and, having said that, it is not such a killer disease as it is made out to be. Guest guest
Dear all, That is not the right explanation scientific & ministry opinion is that Delhi has more lab than any where in country but less case because primary cases were detected & treated early. Contact tracing & tracking was adequate, Which was lacking in pune . Bangalore Has same problem without NIV. Guest guest
Prabha, I agree..... We should take this swine....swine flu virus I mean....seriously. Although it is milder than the Influenza virus for NOW....after propogating from person to person..it could mutate further and become the serious pandemic that we are all getting scared about....!! Guest guest
I'm afraid, Ashish, that's a risk that we have been running every year, with every seasonal outbreak of influenza - it is not restricted to swine flu alone.... Guest guest
Dont know abt that. My cousin is an Ass Prof in AIIMS in Microbiology. Her asthmatic son developed fever and flu symptoms. This is in the early days of swine flu when testing centres were not as many as now.Her virologist colleague tested it for her informally...and it was positive.Ab Tamiflu ke liye official test chahiye. So she and her husband who is a leading cardiologist there pulled strings and got a supply...for him -unofficially-and Prophylaxis for her daughter-dont know what evidence there is for that...and all is well now. I dont think this case actually made it to statistics...figures there are so fudged...Delhi mein to lagga lagake kuch bhi mil jaata hai phir Tamiflu kyon nahi... I would agree with Prabha...so many flu deaths everyday ..and typhoid and cholera.and hepatitis...phir bhi hum panipuri aur bhel khaana to nahi band karte. To be honest agar public ko yeh confidence hota ki test aur Tamiflu aasani se mil raha hai to itna panic nahi hota...here its freely avaliable so no panic at all. 82 To: prabhadesikan@... Guest guest
A fairly common story, . I've had personal experience with that. Public health officials tend to resist filling in and forwarding the required forms - because - if the official figures go up, it opens a can of worms for them. So we do what we do best in India as far as infectious diseases are concerned - we learn to live with them, and build up a fairly decent immunity against them. As far as restrictions on Tamiflu are concerned, and speaking purely from an epidemiological perspective, it may not be such a bad thing after all. There is no control on over-the-counter availability / prescriptions of antimicrobials here, and we would have had widespread resistance to the drug before it was even declared a pandemic - and we would have managed to spread drug resistant swine flu around the globe, with international travel being what it is.
